Largest Home PC Ever?
Please note that this is my first case mod.
50 inches height.(without the wood/castor wheeled base). 18 inches width/depth.

These are teaser pics only. 2 corners are spot-welded to each other. I have to Dremel these out. This may take some time. Don't expect updates soon, or very often. Next couple of weekends are booked for the cottage (before the water gets too cold to swim in.)

It was a unit that Reebok put into select SportChek stores for some NBA promotion. We called their rep to come pick them up when the promotion ended but she told us to just throw em out. We had 4, but I saved one. :)

You should have kept all of them and you would of had a Super huge ass tower thing.

But hinged access is what I'm planning (in my head).

what you could do is get a kit that goes on your car- you know those long 40 inch neon lights, that glow on the ground
and hook those up or something in the corners....

What are you using to grind with? And spot weld? The little round spot where to sheets of metal are joined? If so, got a dril press? If so again, get an endmill the size of the spot weld and set your depth.
blackacidevil
10-17-2004, 01:36 PM
I dont want to drill out the spot welds. That would ruin the outside look of the case. There's a 3/4 inch wide flap that runs down the 2 corners and that's spot welded to the other piece. I'm using a coarse grit grinding stone on my power drill. Grinding down the welds on those inside flaps is the only way to go to detach the case.

The easiest way to bust those spot welds is to use an Air Chisel.
Plus it wont booger up the 90° lip like the grinding dose (then can be straightened out with a hammer & dolly)
There pretty cheap and are useful on many projects.
If ya have air that is or have access to a compressor.

Last night and tonight was dedicated to the control panel. I had to drill drill drill and Dremel Dremel Dremel. Everything fits perfect. One toggle switch is slightly off alignment...I could attempt to fix it, but it's minor in the grand scheme of things. The taped off rectangle in the bottom centre is for the 3.5" fan controller, and I'll cut that out tomorrow.

That thing will be a monster!
Have you thought about what kind of base you will have? - wheels would probably be a good idea. If you recess a wooden base like 2x4's painted black just inside the bottom, you could mount casters on it, and have only an inch clearance off the ground, for a "floating" look.

Very small update tonight. Brought some more stuff home from work, mainly baskets and shelves that fit into the slots of the tower case, some large triangular brackets that I'm going to use for mounting optical drives on the inside, and stopped by Canadian Tire for some supplies. Also picked up a cd-rom drive from Active Surplus (awesome place for anything electronic) for a mere $3.95. Not sure of it *works works*, but it powers up fine and the tray opens/closes. Got it merely for measuring and testing the relocated momentary switches in the control panel. Did that tonight, everything works great.
http://tinypic.com/mlbg4
What you see here is a Laser LED Strobe light. Also bought at Active Surplus. 25 bucks. Hurts the eyes to stare at it directly, and I wouldnt recommend an epileptic from EVER purchasing it, but it will add great effect to the case.
http://tinypic.com/mlc1v
It plugs into a wall socket via an adapter, uses 14V DC and draws 300 milliamperes. Now I know jack **** about electricity, but if anyone who reads this DOES, would it be possible to run this on a 12V line from my PSU? By the time this project is done, I'll need 10 plugs just to power everything. I dont want an 11th!
Help! Anyone?

you probally can but but it might be dimmer than with 14v

11-19-2004, 01:06 AM
your power supply can probably run it. You could try a DC-DC converter, but those are sometimes expensive.
As for all those plugs, just mount a couple power strips up inside, and have just one cord coming out for your main power. :)
lookin' good!
Roshi229
11-19-2004, 08:01 AM
with the size of that tower, i'd put a small UPS in the bottom of it. this would give you like AuD1073cH said one cord coming out and allow you propper surge protection and battery backup. i would recomend one but i'm not sure of the dimentions... i have an APC UPS that has all the plugs on the top of it... would work very well and would prob. fit in the bottom nicely...http://www.apc.com/resource/images/family/primary/21_fam.jpg found here (http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=21)
i got mine at Office Depot or somewhere like that... it's worked great for a year and a half... even used it when the power went out to watch the news for 10 - 15 min and still had enough juice to run the alarm clock...

OK so I have a 4.5 inch angle grinder on loan til Xmas, and I just finished doing the edges tonight. I'm having a smoke break and will go over the edges with a sanding block to remove all the tiny burrs that are guaranteed to become annoying slivers in either my fingers, or the cats' paws. I got about half an hour til WWE RAW is on, so I'll post pics after 11pm eastern time. Back to work now.

*sigh*
Where do I begin...
It was Christmas Eve. The snow was falling outside. I was inside. Engaged in CQC. As an Allied field ops. With an Axis medic. In the Siwa Oasis....
When my monitor went into sleep mode. WTF? i thought. Shut the computer off. Rebooted. Monitor still didnt turn on. Unplugged the monitor. "Check Signal Cable" flashes on the screen. Turned off the PC. Yanked the graphics card. Put it back in. Turned on the comp. Still no effect. Bought a new video card. Installed that. Nothing. Took the Dell to the local PC repair shop. Called me back 2 hours later telling me that they cant do anything to test it properly since Dell uses all proprietary technology and they have nothing compatible to test it against. Labour cost nothing, since they felt bad for me.
Called Dell tech support. Tried every suggestion they gave me. No effect. Bought a brand new harddrive. Tried re-installing XP. Same result. Asked them for a number for a local shop with a Dell-authorized technician. Told me no such place existed anywhere in the world. I told them thanks for all the help but a baseball bat will be my last solution.
Got another Dell on loan from family. Had no OS and the only one it would let me load was WinME. Gates should be castrated for producing such crap. IMO, 3.1 is better.
Oh but wait, I cant get on the internet because there are no drivers for the NIC card installed. There are no drivers for the 56k modem installed. I cant even get on the web with dialup.
It's off to BestBuy with my $100 gift card to purchase a cheap modem so i can download drivers for the NIC card so I can get on my DSL again.
So if you're reading this, I'm back on the web again.
The only good things to come out of this huge problem is:
#1 I'm having more sex.
#2 I actually got more work done on my case.

Cut 3mm wide slits for mounting the optical drives. This allows me to slide the drives back or forth so when I stealth them, the covers can be put flush with the outside of the case. I'm a genius.
At photo time. I only cut slits for one, as you can see, but there will be 2 drives mounted. And then another set of 2 drives on the other side of the case.
And yes, I smoke near the computer, as you can see on the DVD's front plate.

I've done a bit more work. Still cant upload pics though. I'm too lazy to install 2000, and only have 15 days left to activate XP. I found a crack for it, but again, too lazy to install it. In the meantime, I've cut the boards to create the "floor" and "roof" of the enclosure, and cut a hole in the "roof" for the LED strobe light.
I also have hit a mental block in terms of layout design. I still have that huge 170mm hockey table fan, and plan to use it, but I have no idea where to install it for proper ventilation. I'm limited to placement because of the strobelight in the roof and my optical drives location beneath. I need to figure something out.
I look at the window and think that it's TOO big. I know that it's not, because i will have 2 mobos inside. It's just frustrating to get that feeling out of my head.
I'll try and get pics soon though.
No work today though. 6 inches of snow has fallen and my snowboard is yelling at me to take it out.

Today started off with some bitch work. I have 2 fluorescent light diffuser panels. Cut those up to cover the slits in the penthouse and basement sections of the tower, since transparent acrylic would be a waste because you don’t need to see inside. The panels are very brittle, I cracked more than a few pieces cutting them to size. Contact cement used to secure it in place.

Now I wanted to use the old Dell power supply to make a tester, and looked up some guides online on how to do it. Figures Dell uses their own PSU, and not something industry-standard. A few online guides on the wiring details mention splicing the green wire to any black ground wire. This Dell PSU doesn’t have a green wire. So after tonnes of Googling and finding nothing, I trashed it. Gonna pick up a cheap one at Active Surplus Wednesday.
I didn’t get as much done today, which ticks me off. I could have done more, but I had no money til Wednesday and I need supplies for this case. 120mm fans, Dremel cutting discs, etc. So the bulk of Wednesday was a shopping day in downtown Toronto.

I wanted to make 2 vents at the top of the case for the 120mm fans, but the fans are slightly smaller than the square that could be cut. I was going to work on that part next, but a nasty headache came on and I stopped work for the next few hours.
I tried plugging in one of the 120mm fans into the controller, but it didn’t work. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the 3-pin connector was wired wrong. Just had to splice the red wire onto the white and vice-versa. Works fine now.

It is loud on max voltage, but I’m not one for a super-quiet system anyways. Nobody can tell you that the sound of computer fans annoy them when they have the volume cranked on their 5.1 surround sound during a firefight in Enemy Territory.
I’m done for the night. Look for another update Friday.

I have an array of lights and fans and stuff to re-wire. I'm using non-normal switches in my control panel...i need a PSU to power the cdrom drive to make sure they work. For example, the 2 main SPST switches I'm using for the main power buttons have 5 leads on the back of them. How am I supposed to know which ones are the right ones to wire? (since i have no documentation on them)

Ate lunch and downed a couple bottles of Steamwhistle, then tackled the mesh for the 120mm intake vents. The metal was unusual…cutting it with the reinforced disc caused the metal to actually glow redhot and started to melt my disc. But I got it all cut and mounted. Mesh contact cemented and gluegunned to the inside.

K guys, I havent updated in over 4 months...project went on hold for financial reasons.
No pics tonight, but letting you all know that the beast is out of the corner and ready to be worked on this week. Just some simple measuring tonight for the dual 120mm fans at the top.
Also I hit a snag in terms of sealing it up. Since I have so much airflow coming in through the top, inside the case is going to have positive air pressure, so I wont be sealing the walls with plexi. It's kind of a hassle right now to do it, but I believe I shouldnt have any problems with it being "open". I still put in the front window so hands can't reach inside.
I'll try to get an update on the weekend with lots of pics, including dark shots if i can figure out how to change the shutter speed on my crappy digital Canon PowerShot A20. I looked it up but couldnt find any answers.

Monday night:

Tuesday night:
Drilled a small hole in the corner to run the wires from the 4 fans and strobe light down to the Control Panel.
Took the roof outside and re-painted the half with the holes cut, and hung it in the bathroom to dry, with the aid of my hockeytable fan.
http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/3540/hanging1gu.jpg
Marked the spot to cut/chisel out a groove on the top piece so it would fit flush with the L-channel piece.

Had to wait for the delivery of a new couch, so I couldn’t spread out all my modding crap. By the time it arrived I didn’t feel like anything serious, so I just mounted my fan grills and fans onto the roof. You can see where I repainted, I still have to resand, paint, resand, paint, etc.

One of my 80mm quad LED fans developed a crack, for no reason. It’s been sitting in a box, so it’s not like it got stepped on or fell from anywhere. Didn’t feel like dropping any more money than I have to for this case, so I stole some Krazy Glue from work and patched it. Seems to work fine now.
All lit up. Took me a while to figure out how to get the camera to allow longer exposure time, but it worked.

-re-wire the DVD drives
-find the AC adapter for my Laser LED Strobe Light
-mount the hard drives
-install front plexi
-add USB/mic/headphone ports to Control Panel
-take more pics. heh.
