I was thanking about getting a cable connection and i got a cheep cable modem allready. the problem is that i only have one network port on my computer. I was wondering if there was any doc's on how to install 2 network cards in a linux machine and route them to my other machines?
I figure this is the cheepest way to do it. if i can't i'll need an usb cable modem and im not sure how much it will be. If i find a way to use my linux machine as a server i'll be paying about $40 for the hardware i need.

look at linux sites...i know of lots of times that i heard people using there linux box as a router and a firewall...plus...i spent 80 bucks for a microsoft wireless router (it was on sale from 129.99) and that supports 99 wireless connections and 4 cabled ethernet connections...very good too i may add...so if you fall into a pitfall in finding a way to do it on your linux box then do that...but i will keep my eyes peeled for a way to do it in linux...

Linux comes with Doc's and MAN pages to help you set up your software, and YES linux can bu used as a rounter and DNS and a host of other options , just install your packages, include samba, networking, router, and what ever else you wish, also make sure to select the documentaion option so it will install the doc's and man pages ... i personaly like SuSE 8.0 pro... please let me know what version of linux you are planning to use, and i will see if i can find some documentation for you... also an easier solution is to get a networking hub and plug the networking cable from the cable modem into the " link " port of you network hub and make sure the button for " linking " is switched to the ON position, that way all your PC's on the lan can gain acess to the cable modem via thier own network connection... there are MANY doc's on the net that will help you with this... you might also try installing a proxy or socks server software on a PC and rout all your PC's through it to the lan (that's what i do atm) that way PC one can contain a primary firewall for the net, and each PC that connects to it can have a secondary software firewall so that helps you there as well...
Here is the link to AnalogX proxy software... http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htm
Good luck mate..

something else you might consider is using bbiagent if you have an old 386 lying around. The website () will have tons of info on how to do it. when i get my new gaming PC built, that's what im doin to my 486.
you can find it at http://www.bbiagent.net. you just make a special boot disk on your windows computer and boot up ur router computer with the disk. it doesn't even need a hard drive in it, and after it's set up it doesn't need a monitor, mouse, or keyboard either.
