Project: File Server
I hacked up an old Gateway P5-133 computer and installed into a file cabinet drawer. It has front mounted USB ports, Floppy Drive, and CDROM drive. Also has a built in amplifier system, with speakers and 80mm case fans mounted on each side windows. LCD display driven by LCD Smartie; lists system, MBM and Winamp stats.

is just the top drawer filled with the computer or does it take up more than one drawer.

That's a good idea you should patent tat and sell it to office supply stores.

Vermin, thats a good idea, I'll look into it! The computer itself takes up only one drawer, the other three drawers can hold files (like it was intended to!) Right now I'm using the other drawers to store old hardware and electronics. Eventually i'm gonna use the drawer below the computer for the keyboard and mouse.

Here's an early shot of the computer drawer:

Post any ideas you guys have for additonal mods to the fileserver.

why not redo the drawer config, puting the sys on the bottem of the fileing cabnet, then have the keybord and mouse in the middle drawer and leaveing the top drawer for a LCD moniter that you could set up on a actuating arm, think about just opening up a drawer and out pops a moniter.

so that way when you go to a lan party you just plug in one cord (ie surge protector) and have everything in one simple unit.

Lug an entire filing cabinet to a LAN party? Yikes!

I like it, though. What if you could take the face of one of the drawers off and replace it with Lexan, or something similar, so you could try to squeeze the monitor in a drawer and see through it?

And if you put the hardware in one of the bottom drawers, and the monitor in the top one, you could make the second one down a keyboard/mouse pad. Take it off the railing and put it on a hinge, so that it swings downward to reveal a mounted keyboard and the mouse could be strapped to the inner side with velcro, or something. The drawer could lay flat, or propped up like an architect table for ergonomic purposes (you'd have to screw/weld some sort of ledge at the bottom to rest the mouse on when not in use).

Gotta love the irony of a computer ( a device invented to save file space, and to get RID of file cabinents ) being built INTO a file cabinet.

Updated July 9, 2003:
Replaced CD and Floppy Drives; Added 40GB HDD; Trimmed out drive openings, restored brass around lcd (instead of painted gold); Added surge protection (thanks spazoidtechie852003); installed silver rounded IDE cables, installed mini-Keyboard w/built-in mouse; and changed Green. Whew! :D
