I'm having problems with my LAN. The main problem is that "my" computer cannot seem to access the internet using the ethernet port. The latest drivers and firmware were installed for both the NIC and Router. I've talked with tech support for about a total of 3 hours for each product in question. I've also done a low-level format since I thought it might be software issues. Every other computer on the LAN is able to access the internet but the only thing that the computer I've having problems with can do is play games over the LAN.

Router: Linksys BEFSR41 4-Port
NIC: HP EN 1207D

Computer: WIN 98 SE, pavilion 7840, 700 mghz, 192 MB RAM, 20 GB HD,

[Yes I know it's very out dated but I can't exactly afford a new one right now, soon I plan on building one though]

Do all the other PC's run 98 like the computer in question? And is it possible you just forgot to set it up to run its internet off the router?

since it is a linksys router it has a feature that allows someone to log onto the router from inside the network and block the internet access to a certain computer. This is what could have possible happened somehow along the line.

Yes I have configured the 98 box to run off the router multiple times...

My laptop is currently running 98SE with no problems...

You have done this multiple times so you are familair with the setup....hmmm I say your best bet is to try to reconfig the network...again :sigh: and see how it goes

In this order: (its been a while since i'v been in 98..bear with me)

1."windows key"+ "pause break"/device manager. <-- making sure your eithernet adaptor is listed and looks fine with no errors.

2.right click "network neibor"/properties/configuration/
only use TCP/IP/highlight IP/properties/make sure its set to obtian IP and DNS automaticlly(DHCP)

3.Open up IE/tools/internet options/clear history// connections Tab/Lan settings/make sure its "automatically detect settings/

4.Shut down PC/pull power plug for cable modem/push in the little reset button on the router-for about 5 seconds-there will be a red light indecating a reset//plug modem back in-wait for the activity light to start flashing (may take 30 sec. or so)/reboot PC.

5. Are you able to ping the router? start/run/cmd(or command)/ping *space* IP addy. (think IP for that router is 192.168.0.0.1-check though)

that should get ya started... i assume this is cable. let me know how deep you want to get into this.. there is more

Same protocols and everything, it's been double checked and triple checked...

and you can ping the router? 192.168.0.1 sounds right if left at default, but you probably know better than we do

Some friends and I had a problem accessing the Internet at a LAN party last weekend. We manually configured the IP address and all of those things in the TCP/IP settings and it worked. The router is Linksys as well.

It possibly could be the PCI port on your mobo or your cable.

Could you give me an idea of what exactly you guys did to configure the IP?

Also, TSSFan how would I go about fixing my PCI port?

swap pci slots or try another cable is what he is saying.

if you can ping the router.. you know the NIC/PCI/cable are good.

Make sure you CAT5 cable and such works, I thought mine worked...., well it did, but it didn't too.. took it out replaced it with another cable and the interent works... another success story.
