View Full Version : Project Lament: HellRaiser Tribute Mod

ARTbyTROY

Hellraiser is hands down cool and quite scary, there are a fair amount of existing modded cases that pay tribute to the puzzle box but face it, the box isn't scary. Cenobites are scary, so I am shooting for a "what if the box opened and a case modder were transformed into a cenobite" kind of theme, here is my work log so far.

There is a lot happening in the picture below but the drawing tells the basic story and will be what I try to go by and will hopefully be close to what I end up with.
http://www.casemodgod.com/sketch00.jpg
The mod officially begins with a few cuts... Boglin eyes have eyelids, both a moveable top eyelid and a static lower that need to be removed.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell00.jpg
I taped off the section to cut out of the torso and outlined it with a Sharpie.
http://www.casemodgod.com/mannequinhack00.jpg
I cracked it open with a Dremel and a jigsaw, no easy task as the contour of the torso was a factor and also it wanted to melt as I cut it.
http://www.casemodgod.com/mannequinhack01.jpg
I cut down a Lian Li motherboard tray, it is not finished yet and more material will be taken off the top. I was concerned with the amount of room (or lack of) around the sides of the board so I mounted it to the tray and set it and the PSU in for a test fit.
http://www.casemodgod.com/mannequinhack07.jpg
I used an old 4GB drive as a template to get everything lined up, the IDE and power cables will connect at the bottom of the drive behind the motherboard tray.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell13.jpg
Cutting straight lines into a contoured surface isn't easy so I bought a contour guide and set about cutting a hole for the LCD. I also taped off and outlined the abdomen window cut out.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell19.jpg
I put the plexi into my electric oven at 275 degrees for 12 minutes, when it looked softened I took it out, and wearing 'Ove' gloves began quickly forming it around the felt covered abdomen cut out. After the Plexi cooled I traced the edges with a Sharpie marker.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell24.jpg
Here is a test fit of the window, the shape is great but the edges are not as tight as I expected and will require a little more work...
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell26.jpg
I decided to move onto working on the head. First I covered the masking tape wrapped head in aluminum foil, this should make removing the Sculpey a lot easier.
The picture below shows the continuing process of filling everything in, I added some final details and it looks pretty evil so far, the Super Sculpey has proven to be a very workable sculpting medium, I hope it stays as easy to work with after cooking it.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell34.jpg
The Fass-o-Matic reservoir was a little smaller than I had envisioned but no big deal.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell47.jpg
I used an 80mm hole saw bit on my trusty Black&Decker corded drill to rip a hole, the drill seized up a few times when the hole saw would catch up in the cooling plastic.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell49.jpg
After an hour and a half of cutting, drilling and filing the modded cover plate is finally finished.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell65.jpg
Next to take an atomic grill and cut it down to make a border for the outside of the reservoir cutout.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell66.jpg
I also super glued the window in place which was a nightmare but wound up being ok in the end, below is a picture of the almost finished abdomen section.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell69.jpg
The pump fits into the cutout and will be attached to the Alum-angle for the MB tray and also to the base when I make it.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell76.jpg
I also positioned and then cut a hole for the radiator, it lines up nicely with everything else and thankfully the torso is still structurally sound
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell77.jpg
I outlined the handle cutout with terra-cotta Milliput and marked the holes for the bolts.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell82.jpg
I used a 1" hole saw to cut the opening for the fill port and tested for fit, the plexi glass nut that comes with it will not fit so I plan to screw it into the mannequin itself.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell83.jpg
I decided to dump the hard drive in the head idea in favor of putting a Laserpod inside the head, below is the unit in red.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell81.jpg
I did a test fit of the top window using masking tape, I also cut out the teeth and placed them inside the head for a test fit.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell91.jpg
I took the newly formed plexi window and drew a brain pattern onto the outside of it using a silver Sharpie marker.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell96.jpg
A couple hours of Dremeling later and I had a cool custom brain etch. I then used Magic Sculpt on the inside edges to hold the window in.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell99.jpg
Once everything was dry it was time to mock up the lighting mods for the head and see how it looked.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell98.jpg
I began painting the head by laying down a base coat and working it up with more color as I went.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell102.jpg
Here is the top of the head removed, since you will be able to see it from the top window I painted the inside of the head a dark blood red.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell103.jpg
Below is a test fit of the Glo-wire, I almost talked myself out of using it because it looks so cool with just the bloody lines in the face but it looks kick ass installed and on. I also did a little more paint detailing
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell105.jpg
I removed the eyeballs and painted the assembly for them black, I also added the final detailing to the head (including making the top window cutout bloodier and jagged) in preparation for varnishing. Three coats of varnish and the eyeballs reinstalled, the finished product is below.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell107.jpg
I started wrapping the torso in leather, or I should say I wrapped the abdomen window section. The window has been simplified in comparison to my original sketch, but I think it will tie in better when finished this way.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell109.jpg
Below is the finished chest section, I added the cover plate to the LCD to hide the wires on the side of the unit.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell113.jpg
I put everything together to get a rough idea of what the finished mod should look like...

Almost all the leather work is finished, there are a couple of spots that I need to attach some Velcro, like the side section for the motherboard ports...

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell115.jpg

I also need to Velcro the piece of leather that will wrap around the neck. Since the leather adds a layer of thickness to the cut-out parts of the torso I decided to run a final test fit of components, below is the shoulder mounted fill port and the handle.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell116.jpg

The abdomen and chest sections are finished, all the hardware is installed and it lines up nicely.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell117.jpg

I did a test install of the PSU, HDD (with WC block), radiator (without the fan) and the motherboard tray.
http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell118.jpg

Here is a shot of the back. I used a plastic mesh to cover the area on the bottom where the pump will be installed to allow easy access to the pump and fittings if needed, it blends in well.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell119.jpg

Next I will begin work on the arms, I bought some size 6 ladies leather pants off ebay and will use those to cover the arms.

Hey ARTbyTroy, do you sell your creations by any chance? Also, I was wondering if you might like to collaborate with me on a project I want to build in the near future. I've got all the plans laid out, I'm just not that great at sculpting.

ARTbyTROY

Megatron,

I am considering selling this mod when it is done and wish I could help you out with the sculpting but I have way too much going on as it is right now... but I do wish you luck with it.

I did some more work on the mod today... I installed four red LED rocker switches onto the shoulder blades to control the lighting mods.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell120.jpg

To begin making arms I first drew and cut out a template to trace onto the scrap aluminum from the top window on MOBY2... never throw good scraps away.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell121.jpg

I cut them out with a Dremel and filed them smooth, next I puzzled together some hardware so that they can attach to the torso.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell122.jpg

Below is a test fit, everything lines up good and feels solid.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell123.jpg

I removed the base from both Viewsonic speakers then cut and drilled four strips of flat Alum-Angle to hold them in place.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell124_copy.jpg

Here is a parting shot of both speakers installed, not too shabby considering I built the assemblies on the fly with no real plan.

I took the two right hands and made one of them a left hand by cutting off the thumb and pinky and duct taping them on their opposing side. I also removed the lining and cut down the pair of leather gloves.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell126.jpg

I connected together and then soldered a fan power cable onto each of the two side by side 12 LED brake light assemblies, heat shrinking all the connections as I went. I used door edge molding to line the strips up to each other and then wrapped them with electrical tape in the center and on the ends.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell127.jpg

Below are the spikes for the backs of the arms being assembled, I made the spikes out of scrap plexi from the local hardware and each consists of four layers of plexi. The middle two layers are the spikes, the zig-zag spike layer was sanded for a frosted effect and the inside edge was heat polished, the outer two layers are there only to provide a channel for the rows of LEDs. I glued the layers together and when dry I placed the LED strip inside the channel and wrapped it with duct tape for good measure.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell128.jpg

Here they are all lit up (with flash on)...

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell129.jpg

Below, no flash... much bling.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell130.jpg

We recently replaced our hot water heater and didn't use all the foam for the pipes because they were short, the leftover piece (top of below pic) will be formed into the flesh of the arms. I also bought a long length of a smaller diameter thinner foam to fill in the musculature of the arms. Everything I used to make the arms is shown in the picture below.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell131.jpg

Below shows the upper arm assembly roughed out and ready for some foam detailing. The insulating foam tubing cuts easily with a serrated edge steak knife. I also plugged in all the cables for the speakers before I started filling it in.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell132.jpg

And below you can see why... it is all held together by good old black duct tape.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell133.jpg

Here they are almost finished, I added a little more foam to the left forearm since the below picture was taken and it no longer looks deformed (though for something like this deformity wouldn't really matter). The arms are very light weight (around 5 lbs. each), which is a good thing.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell134.jpg

The picture below shows the arms fleshed out (minus what I added to the left forearm) and installed. The arms go on and come off really easily, which was one of my big goals for this mod and necessary for the removal of the abdomen and chest sections. Now I have to wrap them in leather, that's not as easy as it sounds due to the spikes and speakers... but I have a plan.

Fixed the links...

Here are the arms all wrapped up and installed, they came out better than I could have hoped and things are moving right along.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell137.jpg

ACRyan sent one of their smoked Acrylpanels for me to use as a base for this mod, I have nothing but good things to say about this product... it is thick as hell and very easy to work with. I masked the entire sheet off both front and back and marked it with a sharpie for cutting.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell138.jpg

Now that it is cut to shape I will mark and drill the holes that will hold the mannequin to the base. While I was at it I also drilled holes for the puzzle box and wiring to go through.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell139.jpg

I had decided right after I got the Acrylpanel that even though it was plenty sharp looking as is that it would look better if I vinyl dyed a section from the puzzle box onto the bottom of it.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell140.jpg

So I re-masked the whole thing, drew my pattern onto it and attacked it with an X-Acto knife. Below is the masked section all cut out and awaiting a coat of black vinyl dye.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell141.jpg

And in the next picture you can see it after I removed the mask, next I sprayed it with a very pale yellow coat and topped it off with a final coating of black.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell142.jpg

And the finished back painted Acrylpanel base is below.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell143.jpg

Since there will be wiring for the power button below the base I decided to use some case feet from a Lian-Li and two that I snagged from my daughters PC on the bottom of the base. I vinyl dyed all of the feet black and installed them.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell144.jpg

Next I test installed the puzzle box, it will be held in place two screws inside it.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell145.jpg

I have already installed the power switch into the box, but haven't taken a picture of it yet. Below is the finished base, all that is left now are wiring mods and final assembly... not far now.

The switch is installed into the box and the wiring is run beneath the base, the water pump is also installed onto the base. The long bunch of wire at the bottom of the picture is how much I removed from the back of the pump.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell148.jpg

I got all the wiring finished up, what a nightmare. It still needs to be cleaned up, but everything is set to be plugged in. You can see the power button on the box in the lower right corner of the picture below.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell147.jpg

Finishing up the wiring also meant hooking up the 6" LCD screen and changing out the blue Fass-o-matic LED for a red one. I plugged in a SpongeBob handheld video game to test the screen out... SpongeBob.

I keep getting new ideas as time passes and the mod progresses, like the need for a CDRW/DVD combo drive to make it a complete and self contained computer... so I ordered and installed one.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell154.jpg

Here is the back of the chest section with everything all wired up and ready to be installed. I added a couple red lazer LEDs to the bottom to help better light the interior.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell155.jpg

The view from the front, I painted and glazed the whole thing and it can be set aside because it is FINISHED.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell156.jpg

Next up, adding lighting to the inside of the abdomen. I am using some flexible LED strips from Sunbeam for the main interior lighting held in place with zip ties.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell150.jpg

But the LED strips are white... this will not do. A coat of paint later and they blend perfectly.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell151.jpg

While I was at it I enamel painted the draw latches that hold the abdomen window in place...

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell152.jpg

And below is the result of my labor, abdomen window section... FINISHED.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell153.jpg

The instructions for the LaserPod implicitly state not to disassemble it... so I did.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell158.jpg

Below is the motor that will control the movement of the eyes, it has an extra wire that when hooked to a momentary switch make the motor turn a single revolution... which gave me an idea. I am not going into detail about how the motor makes the eyes move, I am just happy it worked.\

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell157.jpg

A top down shot showing the Laserpod installed, there is also a red laser LED in the forhead area (not visible) for extra lighting. I cut a piece of plexi to fit the inside of the head, next I cut a hole just big enough for the Laserpod to fit through into the plexi and backpaint it black with Krylon Fusion.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell159.jpg

I also installed a UV laser LED above the eyes, since they are made of glow in the dark plastic it only made sense. I then hooked up the EL wire that wraps around the outside of the head making this part (the hardest part)... FINISHED.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell160.jpg

Last up on my full days work list, the keyboard. I installed a small SPST momentary switch into the top right of the keybaord to control the movement of the eyes, I also sleeved the wires together and that makes this part also FINISHED.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell161.jpg

Here is a short video (http://www.casemodgod.com/eyesfinal.wmv) of the motorised eyes in action... they came out better than I had hoped.

05/19/2005 Update... It will not die!

Things that I thought to be (and well could have been) finished have been worked on even more to make them just that little bit better, like the above mentioned keyboard... it still needed something. Since I did not need for the UV LEDs above the eyes to be on all the time and did not want to hook them to any of the switches on the back of the torso I decided to run a second SPST momentary switch to the keyboard so that I can make the eyes completely freak out with light and motion all from one spot.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell162.jpg

I remembered an old Hannibal Lechter mask that I had, just goofing around I decided to put it on the head... it looked pretty freaked out, but it was a coppery color and made of thin plastic. Four coats of vinyl dye to the mask and the same in silver spray paint for the mouth section, along with felt lining the inside of the mask for both support and protection from scratching up the face and the newest addition to the mod is finished. It easily slips on and off and will mainly be used when transporting it.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell163.jpg

Installing the hardware and water cooling...

Well, installing hardware is easy (done it a million times) but water cooling is admittedly new to me. I got everything inside the abdomen and installed the window... which caused a few kinks in my tubing. I have some springs already installed on most of the hoses and have ordered more to cover the rest. I also have to shorten a couple other hoses to make sure that nothing gets kinked when the window is on... I am learning and thankful that I did not jump the gun and fill it with water before noticing the problems.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell165.jpg

Almost there, once the springs arrive I will redo the tubing, tidy up the wiring and probably add a pair of meteor lights into the abdomen... then I can finally fire this bad boy up.

man, i don't know how you do it, but this just keeps getting better and better! i was just lookin at your latest developments, and came up with an idea for consideration; maybe you could mount an infrared reciever somewhere so its not that noticeable, then wire that in so you can point like a car remote or something at it and activate the eyes wirelessly...that'd be kinda freeeeeky. you just point to it and suddenly the eyes and lights come to life....can you imagine the shrieks from our female viewers?

Its very hard to believe you can put a computer in there, and that is so cool, how long did you work on it a day?

It has been difficult figuring out how best to get all the parts into the mannequin, $35 off eBay for a really cool case... but there is not as much room inside it as you would think.

As far as how much time a day I worked on it, well... since modding is just a hobby I like to do after the full time job (and website I run, www.CaseModGod.com) I have only been able to mod on and off, here and there. But that is also part of what has helped to make this mod what it has become, since I did not personally place any type of time limit on this project it has allowed me to rethink parts of it and redesign others in an attempt to make it better (my wife gave me a last Wednesday deadline... lol). Nothing kills a mod worse than not having the time to do it right and just rushing through it, it is all in the fine detail.

Since I made additions to both the head and the keyboard (both were supposedly done) I felt that an addition could be made to the abdomen window to make things better too. I painted and installed another strip of flexible red LEDs that will sit inside the bottom base of the belly and light the area around the processor block up to the video card.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell166.jpg

I also decided to upgrade the chest section as well by adding two meteor lights that I cut up to fit inside, they will shine down into the abdomen window section and provide an animated lighting effect to offset the lasers in the head. I used black vinyl dye to make the box, switch and button match and then installed the modded cover plate behind the section of leather with velcro on the top and bottom...

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell167.jpg

Everything plugs in on this side. Some of the components like the mouse and keyboard plug into the PC beneath the flap, for the monitor plug I made its own cutout (as seen below). The cover flap was actually one of the biggest design hurdles of this project, but I think I made good use of space by having nearly EVERYTHING (external and internal) plug in from this area, including the monitor and also control of the meteor lights.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell168.jpg

For the back cutout I used a black mesh speaker grill that is held in place with liquid electrical tape, it looks a lot better than the black plastic mesh I had wedged in there before.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell169.jpg

The top is glued down and the bottom is held down by velcro, it makes for easy access to the pump and is also the air intake for the PC.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell170.jpg

I painted the PSU tray with black enanel paint and changed out the silver thumb screws for black.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell171.jpg

Below is the back of the beast, one of the things that I decided early on was that it would have to look good from all angles, including the back. It was tempting to just ignore detailing the back since it would hardly be seen but now that it's done it really paid off.

Just waiting for the springs I ordered to arrive so I can fix the tubing and leak test it.

05/23/2005 Update... Killing time.

Well, the springs did not get here today (damn USPS). Since the springs are holding me up I decided to finish up some other busy work and painted/glazed the arms... I also blacked out the fingernails for visual interest.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell173.jpg

Here is a quick snap of my dining room/work shop, I think that if nothing else the past six months have served to prove to my wife that I need a real workshop added onto our house... she has been missing the dining room.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell174.jpg

I really hope my springs get here tomorrow.

06/05/2005 Update... Almost alive.

My springs finally arrived a couple days ago, I did not have time to fix up the mod until today, but I got a good deal done... and it is almost done. I painted the grill over the Fass-o-Matic black and glazed it to match the leather, if you look inside the neck you can see the sound activated EL inverter I am using in place of the Ultra EL inverters for the Glo-wire on the head. I also touched up the paint around the Fass hole where glue showed through... it looks pro now.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell175.jpg

Here is a view of the guts of the monster, all the springs are attached (21 in all) and I hope that any kinking issues have been killed.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell176.jpg

And here is the view from the other side, the flow meter sits over the RAM and will provide visual as to whether the W/C is working proper or not.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell177.jpg

I cleaned up the wiring a little and re-attached the chest section, I then attached the abdomen window section to test for kinks... I will add water and test for leaks tomorrow. Almost done, W00T!

Water is in and the pump is up and running, decided to test a couple of other things at the same time like some of the lighting and the LCD.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell179.jpg

Looking good so far and no leaks yet (knock wood)... I may have killed the CDRW/DVD drive, I will look into it after the leak test is through. Over four hours into leak testing and she looks sealed up tighter than a frogs bung, I know I cinched up everthing real good but I am still going to let it run overnight to make sure. Below is a shot of the flow-meter and guts, dark close up.

Ladies and gentlemen...

We have first POST!

Pressed the button on the box and it fired right up, video on the little LCD and everything... bit of bad news now, after extensive troubleshooting I have determined that the slim line CDRW/DVD is defunct (there is in fact a blank CD now stuck in it). I have contacted the company I bought it from and now await a call back... I hope they are cool about it as it has only been a month since I bought it.

http://www.casemodgod.com/Hell181.jpg

I am hopeful that I get an RMA without any "You were using it other than intended" BS, still happy though even if I have to foot buying a new drive... the monster kicks and breathes, it is alive.

I have no regrets as to the cost of this mod, but then again I haven't added up the receipts yet... oh well, even if it is over 2K I don't care because my hobby is still cheaper than bass fishing (seriously) and the mod looks awesome in person (way better than a fish on the wall). Besides, I can enter it into art shows as well as mod contests and will hopefully get back what I have into it plus. I will gather up the receipts and post a total soon.

06/08/2005 Update... Finished.

I am not going to worry about the slimline CDRW/DVD drive being broken for now, I can replace that later and use the USB 2 CDRW/DVD drive to install Windows. I am calling this one done.

Thanks.

I am not normally one to easily let things go, even though I am calling it done I have already been thinking of a few more things to do to it. I have been trying to figure out how to hinge both the chest section (with the res. and LCD) and the removable motherboard tray to make the HDD pump controller and pump fittings more accessible... among other things. Mainly minor stuff/extras that will make it just that little bit better. It could possibly be considered a sickness, but I am not letting this mod die before it is as good as I can make it... it is merely at rev. 1.0.

More to come.
