I'd like to buy a projector for a home theater system. how can I tell how far back the projector can be and how big the picture can get. I dont know if that's clear, but I hope you can understand it.

when you look at the specs of a projector they will have a minimum and maximum picture size, like 60" to 150", and it should say what it takes to get them that sizes in the manual/

This website http://www.projectorcentral.com/ will tell you every thing you need to know about most projectors throw distance, lumens, weight, resolution, image size, etc. I believe they even have a mailing list...
But to answer your question more specificly "throw distance" is a count usually in feet that will tell you how far back and how close it can be. The projectors usually come with a chart in the Manual about how big the image will be depending on the "throw distance"
