I just got a Sony 5-Disc Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Model: DVPNC875V/B) and it works great. plays dvd+r/-r/mp3/..the works. So obviuosly i got it home and tried it out to the max and for some reason when i play rental dvd's it is rubbish. It will fade in dark and then light..and when parts in the movie are dark or something it will skip and jump like there is a bad connection ...but when i try to immediatly put in a burned dvd or a reg. dvd purchased from a store it plays flawlessly. I don't really understand this at all..is there a different format used by rental stores or something? or are my connections bad ..either way any input would be greatly appreciated.

yeah that might be it..but i think its something more just because of the inconsistancy of the actuall skipping and the fading..its really strange.

That's your problem right there. DVD players have built in copy protection, and that fading in and out is what happens when it is wired through a second connection. It's just strange that it only happens some times. Try the DVD player on someone elses TV using the supplied jacks(RCA, S-video,or component) and see if it still happens.

ding ding.

Macrovision sucks.

If you rip your own DVDs, it may not happen. But ya.. they do that.
When you can, get a TV with Component - it will also have s-vid as well.

It probably is the macrovision that is causing your problem. Also make sure that it is set to interlaced and not progressive scan if you are running it through a modulator. Having progressive scan on can cause some issues, but it does sound like a modulator/vcr issue. the symptoms that you are describing are prime examples of Macrovision.

awesome. Thanks alot guys. I had been thinking it was my new system or something. But now that i think about it the Macrovision makes alot of sense and im def. in the market for a tv with component.
