Is the ipod mini on apple's site here (http://www.apple.com/ipodmini/) the 2nd generation. so really im asking is this the ipod mini that has 18 hours of playback?

Most likely you wont get the full 18 hrs...expect more like 14 or so, but it really depends on how you use it.
