Operation: Integration Alumicoat..phase I
Finally.. plans for Integration Alumicoat have been aproved! (by me, web56n)
In the proceeding weeks I will be performing this extreme mod,
with step by step collaboration of details and pictures.
consisting of a completely modded pc work station.
Phase I - Design
this operation will consist of having the entire work station integraded, which will include completely custom built desk that will become the pc's case.
along with a semi-stealthed keyboard and mouse, a stealthed webcam that will be built into lcd monitor and will be remotely controlled from keyboard tray.
Desk top
desk top will be fabricated from 0.040" brushed aluminum, it will include a splat window for viewing purposes, directly in front of monitor.
here is a drawing of top view of desk top

projected cost is about $4.00 more than my wife wants me to spend!
to tell you the truth, it's a running total and not sure as of yet.
I got materials from local metal shop, cost for that was $20.00
including all shearing.

If you look in the ideas & suggestions forum, I posted a project like this a couple weeks ago. Sounds like you have everything thought out, but you might pick up an idea. One thought would be to incorporate a NAT router inside the desk, to alleviate some of the desk clutter. Plus you could put some ports on the back of the desk to act as the hub.
Might want to build speakers into the desk, as well. The idea behind it (well, behind mine, anyway) was to clear up the clutter, so the more things that you're able to incorporate, the better (and cleaner).
I was going to do mine out of a hard wood, but I like the brushed aluminum. Are you going to use anything to frame it up first, or do you think the aluminum will be sturdy enough to support itself?

Don't tell me you ACTUALLY told your wife how much it'll be? I'm on the phone right now with the UHU (United Husbands Union) to report your infraction. I'm all for trust & tellin' the truth but, c'mon.
***The preceding was for those who don't understand...just humor  ***
Can't wait to see some pix of this project as it progress'. What do you have in mind for the legs? If you don't have a set idea for them yet (which I doubt, you're very thorough) IKEA has some that would certainly suit the crisp, clean style you're after.
Be well!

Mods underway.... semi-stealthed keyboard.
first I'll explain the mod, it will be a complete keyboard tray that is fabricated from acrylic boxed so keyboard can fit into and sit flush.
the tray will be claded with brushed aluminum and also keys
when finish keyboard will be mounted and visible but will not be on top of tray but flush with tray.
here is a pic of doner keyboard
http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=f25625db-56ad-2d69-1723-1529e06738f9&size=
keyboard is a cheap luxor cost $8.00 ( won't matter cause all you'll see are the three lights from the original keyboard)
most or all keyboards have a convex key and sit slightly higher on each layer of keys,(angled) in order to have keyboard mounted completely flush with tray the keys had to be sanded flat and true on the same plain like this
http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=4cf44e17-11da-4a17-7b89-632ec3db5552&size=
and this

the keys will have new tops mounted of brushed aluminum and will be ingraved with letters and numbers

Heh, you guys are killin me. So what's your number? Like, when I give my wife a price, I usually quote her at about 66% of the actual ammount. What's your percentage?
The manual says & I quote:
"The actual amount of anything you do (See footnote) or spend is for the most part a judgment call by yourself. However there are loose guidelines that as members of the UHU we would like you to follow. Below is an excerpt from the manual:
[list]1. $100.00 spent on something you enjoy is equal to $63.00 wife dollars
2. A 1/2 hour job is = 3-4 wife hours depending on your skill level
3. 12 of your closest friends = "a couple of buddies" over for the game
4. 18 beers = a "couple" wife beers
5. The phrase "I'll be right back" or "Do you need anything from the store" should NEVER be spoken by you, as it could make her suspicious & make her want go to (insert store name) with you. Unless you ARE going to the corner store & want to score some brownie points.
[list]
It should be noted that just because they (wives) are soft, smell good, are easy on the eyes (for the most part) does NOT by any stretch of the imagination mean they should be taken lightly. They have us out numbered with their union (The International Order of Wives - IOW) by 2-1. Which means that they can network to a larger amount of their membership through various albeit seemingly innocent endeavors. Some are:

Tupperware, Candle-lite, lingerie, (insert any local phenom here) parties
Bake sales
And so on...

(Footnote: this term does not apply if you are doing something for your Mother-in-law as she is a senior member of the IOW & has years of experience. There is a consolation to this however, since you are helping her out she will not tell her daughter the actual time, beer drank, or money spent on a project you do for her as it is in her best interest to keep you happy & wanting to help (escape from your house) her out in the future.

How will these be mounted to the keys? I originally thought you'd be replacing the entire key(s), but it looks like you'll just be fastening these on top of the original keys (epoxy?).
And be careful. I imagine trying to smooth the edges of those aluminum keys will be quite tedious, and leave you prone to grip-related accidents.

the frame is made from 1"x1" acrylic, which sits along the outer edge of keyboards tray.

keyboard or whats left of it sits in cavity of frame and brushed aluminuim is on top acting as a lid.

What are you cutting with to get such smooth lines? A jigsaw?
just a dremel with this
this I find the best to cut with
http://web56n.free-host.com/dremel.JPG
this is a tungsten tipped carbide bit. it may be a bit more money to buy ( $16.00) but the results are out standing. and I've had this one for years. I have yet used a cut off disc of any brand.
for the sake of this bit you'll wear out your dremel before you wear it out. and cutting is a breeze.
from all the cutting I have done it's cheaper in the end.

Really? I was asking the clerk at Lowes about the tungsten carbide cutting tools, and he said it might be good for about 14ft worth of cutting before it wore out. I should have checked for myself, but thought I'd take his word for it.
Have you noticed it dull out any? How much cutting would you estimate you've done with it?

first off you NEVER take a salesman's advice when it comes to tools,
the people that know how good a tool is are people that use them not sale them...
if I had to guess on how many ft. this lttle guy has cut aluminum/ mildsteel, let's just say if it only lasts 14ft. then right there that tell's me they don't know even how to use it.
sure it might dull out fast if your trying to grind hardened steel.
to answer your question, hmm. I really couldn't tell you how many ft. I've had this for years 500.ft.+ now remember if you don't know how to use it properly it could last 5 inches...

ok... these are just construction pics
first off I wanted to lose the monitor base...so it can be placed somewhere else,
http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=7ad33829-40a6-1291-660c-2911d8141c3e&size=
I extended the small power cord with a 6ft. extention cable.
this is what it looks like without base.
http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=d1d922d8-19f0-3f5a-77dd-26573acb1dd0&size=
I've chosen to use 2" aluminum pipe (which still needs to be polished) to house all wires and cables that come from monitor making sure that they all fit. I also just drilled two small holes to match the holes on back of monitor to fasten pipe giving me the same adjustment as before.
I then layed out and cut hole for pipe that will go through desk top, at ther ear of splat window.
http://www.hpphoto.com/servlet/LinkPhoto?GUID=39e272b5-4029-241b-664d-11273e1e10a1&size=

here is a pic of monitor bezel notice the hole in the top center
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/new%20bezel.JPG
I have cut a piece of acrylic and tinted it to match the front of monitor.
for a few reasons,
1-to cut down on reflection at night.
2-so when the monitor is shut off it appears to be silver.
3-and most important, to keep little fingers off the soft surface of monitor
(kids are always pointing at something on the monitor)

the chair from a 1990' pontiac, has arm rests on both sides.

as you can see the right side arm rest has a stealthed fold out beverage holder along with a compartment for cd's.
both sides fold up out of the way for easy access, it also has been wired for 5.1 dolby digital! you can also see there is a lever to recline the chair if it's just relaxing time yeah it fully reclines too!
http://www.yoshi.us/web56n/OIA/New%20Folder/the%20chair.JPG
the speakers are mounted from under the head rest so if head rest goes up so do the speakers, they are also fully adjustable to any position.
here you can see a handy little compartment on the back for important what ever's.....

The pouch on the back of the chair could be used to store the current issues of PC Gamer, or something similar.
How does the chair (audio) plug into your system? How difficult was it to mount and balance a chair with that weight on casters? Did that particular chair come with both consoles, or did you have to mount the one on the right? That's very cool, and I think I want to steal your idea since I can't get comfortable in a regular desk chair.

the speaker wires are run through the chair and exit at the bottom, they then connect to the remote center for the speakers.
that is connected to pc via digital 5.1 optical cable ( one cable)
the weight of the chair is minimal,
old office wood and chrome chair weighed only 3 pounds less
the balance was very easy, base is fastened to center of bottom
and the arm rests were both mounted seperate.
1pc- 1/4"thick aluminum plate 8"x20" the old base of chair was fastened to that. (4 exsiting holes)
2pc's- 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" aluminum angle iron 24" long and 36" long. these pieces also get fastened to plate and are drilled out to match 4 holes on the bottom of chair
the longer one also mounts the brackets for the arm rests with 5/16" readyrod and is covered with 3/4" aluminum tubing

I don't know. I'd have to work on my poker face first. "No, sir, you didn't actually kill Saddam, this is just a game." "Yes, sir, I voted for you." "Yes, sir, four more years."
Just as a disclaimer regarding statments made in this post: I am a Republican. I do think Bush is an idiot. I do get sick of people constantly bashing him (for the wrong reasons at least. there are plenty of legitimate beefs). I am actually very good at poker (no work needed). And finally, I wasn't old enough to vote in the 2000 election, so that statement is irrelevant.

Oh hell no, none of that now. I did say I'm Republican so of course I'm registered. I'm not big on circular arguements based loosely on politics that revolve more around "my team's better than your's (because I'm on it)" than actual facts. I think in many respects the Bush administration is great. He's assembled a great cast, but as member of said Party, I respectfully submit that he's the Jimmy Carter of my time. He's doing a terrible job, he just manages to cover it up with small victories that get massive press and the lack of a Democrat to show any balls up to this point allows this to continue. But hey, is a Canadian's sickeningly great mod thread the place for this? Of course not.

Nice. In Canada I've only purchased food, fishing gear, and cigars. My family has a cottage in Ontario and even the (friendly) Canadians think they're a joke.

This project is really amazing, but I got one question (sorry if you already awnsered this!) How did you get the letters on the keyboard, was it a decal kit or did you paint them on? Again, GOOD JOB!

lol no activity in over a year and a half and suddenly its the hot topic again; not that i blame anyone, i'm in awe myself. i must admit, i'd never thought of using wire clothes line for lining a window like that.
one question there though, how well did it contour to the sharper angles? i'm still lookin for something to line the windows of my own machine, and i've got quite a few sharp angles that nothing else will contour to. did you make small slits on the back side, or how did you ensure that it wouldn't kink or flatten out?
one final thought: WE WANT MORE MODS!!!! :D seriously man, you get us all excited then just disappear for awhile, although i suppose the family needs some time with dad every now and then
