What techniques and materials did you use to make the rusting effect?

The corroded finish was achieved using automotive body filler over the raw steel case, then painted with the American Accents Rust kit, from Krylon. Did a lot of airbrushing as well.

The parts I modeled this case with are basicaly polystyrene plastic...I buy it in sheets and cut them into patterns to make the shapes, like the top vent on the Biohazard mod. Its strong and flexible stuff, the same used for model kits. The bezels for the windows are both from plastic clocks purchased at a thrift store.

Here is a close up of the Skilcraft Human skull kit:

There's my Alien case Mod on my website, a project I completed about a year and a half ago. Sort of a tribute to H.R. Giger's Alien and the second movie Aliens from James Cameron. There will be an article about the Alien Case Mod in the September Wired magazine issue..I havent seen the photos they took, but I hope they're good!

I'd like to continue to bring old school prop building, movie magic and special effects to my future mods :) Thanks to all for the kind feedback.

The project took me about 40+ hours...

I started with a generic "Color Case" and using various parts from model kits, 99 cent stores and auto parts stores, I built on top of the case. The skull window is made from a life-sized human skull kit and a plastic clock face from a thrift store. The corroded texture is made with auto body filler and airbrushed to look rusted and crusty.

The exhaust fan on top is a lighted green Antec case fan with biohazard grille. Inside are dual green cathode tubes for illumination. The power and reset buttons on the front are the safety recessed type. The other side of the case has the "Bio Containment Unit" window and switches for the various lights. The Bio Containment Unit has multiple strobe warning and indicator lights. I added a front bay door and behind it installed a Nexus Fan controller and Nexus CPU fan controller. The green contaminant was sculpted in clay and then cast in a polymer resin. Clear epoxy mixed with flourecent green paint was applied to give it a wet look.

Very nice work, CS. Have you tried taking the case apart on that fan controller to see if you can change the color of the backlighting?

I thought about it, but I'm not a real stickler for keeping every single LED the same color...Gotta figure blue is atleast in the same color range as green..thanks for the feedback!
