This is my first mod post on the forum so either be gentle or offer me some lubrication products before... j/k

I know I've seen it around a few times, but I haven't found it here (wrong search terms maybe?). I can't afford a new PSU right now but I have plenty of older ones, and I have an upcoming project that only needed three power outlets (ATX, and 2 molex). I've started focusing on my (thusfar) bad cable management and decided it was time to get rid of excess power cables, but I didn't want to just lop them off without a way of getting them back. I remembered seeing a modular PSU mod somewhere and thought it would fit the bill perfectly.

Parts needed:
PSU (already had it)
molex y-splitter (one for each cable, I've still got 3 or 4 spare)
Duh (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d5/Wyndle/S5301277.jpg)

Tools needed:
Solder and Iron
electric tape
wire cutters
multimeter
molex pin remover or a steady hand and another tool that can reach

Optional parts:
heatshrink tubing or wire wraps (may as well do it while you've got the wires snipped).

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d5/Wyndle/S5301273.jpg

I started by cutting one wire set at a time, making sure to label one of the ground wires (I always did the one next to yellow). I cut them long enough that I could cut off a mistake if I absolutely had to and I would still be able to use the wires without opening the PSU.

I then pushed the pins out of the male end of the y-splitter and sniped them with 1/16th" of wire still connected and removed the remaining plastic. The pick shows a couple of the pins already soldered, I was getting into the project before I thought to grab the camera, doh.

Male molex in place and yes, that is electric tape in the second pic. I dont have any tubing and a large surplus of electric tape, so I used lots of what I had.

The pins for the second cable in place.

Setup finished. I figured the other end was self-evident so I didn't snap any shots of that in progress. The pic shows the one cable that I'll use (wrapped in tons of electric tape).

Total cost $0
Total time 3 hours, but only because WeetaBiX started quoting from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and I had to put it on. That time also included stripping the stickers after I put the camera away.

Due to the large number of comments and suggestions, I'm posting this a second time with the pictures.

and that's the end of the grills, took me about 6-7 hours in total, and cost me um i think 6 or 7 bucks, for the socket cap screws nuts and foam rubber
