So all of a sudden one day my linksys g wireless router stops putting out 54 mbps and begins supplying me with 11.0 mbps..

I switched out the router with an older intel one, did the same thing-

tried another router- same

I've tested all the equipment in part with others networks, all working fine..

Anyone have a lead here?

thanks in advance

nothing changed at all it just one day all of a sudden dropped down to 11? Check to see how good of a connection you had and if you can try updating the firmware on the router.

If you tried 3 different G routers and only got 11Mbps, I would assume it's more of a computer/network adapter problem than a router problem. But double check some of this first:

-In your router settings, Mixed mode, G mode, B/G mode, or something that makes sense to enable G is turned on.
-Check with a separate tool to see what your network is spitting out. Try NetStumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/) and see what bitrate it sees....it would also help to compare what NetStumbler says on the computer you're having problems on with the results of another G-enabled one.

To check if it's your card, there are a few different ways to go about this. First, depending upon your card or dongle or whatever, it may or may not have a separate control panel for controlling it rather than the Windows Zero Configuration box. If this is the case, and especially if you actively use this tool, poke around everywhere as much as you can for some sort of option where you can enable G mode or make sure it is already enabled. I can't tell you where to find the options, because, frankly, every adapter has their own panel with their own design.

However, you can also check the adapter properties in Device Manager for another place to enable G mode or ensure it's already on. Open Device Manager (right click My Computer and click Manage), find your wireless card, right-click it, and hit Properties. One of the tabs in the dialog box offered to you should have a few options in a list on the left and an area on the right where you can change the option you pick from the left. Again, the options listed depend on the card (and the driver installed for that card), so I can't name anything specific. But usually there is an option available here.

See if this helps, hopefully the problem isn't anything too serious or anything too obvious that we're overlooking.

yea I've got netstumbler running and its reading 11.0 as well signal/snr are both at 52+

reading excellent on windows connectivity

if I hardwire with the router I obviously get 100.0

hmm..still looking

thanks for the help thusfar

I've experienced a similar problem. Most of the time, I get my 54Mbps connection, so all is well. However, it's not a constant rate; it fluctuates like mad for no reason. The signal strength will stay exactly the same, and next thing I know, I'll go from 54Mbps to 1Mbps.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but I would assume it either has to do with the fact that the WiFi is built into the modem we got from the ISP, or that it's due to the obviously cheap WiFi adapter in my $600 laptop. Either way, it's terribly annoying, isn't it?
