a Cantanna should carry the signal a good distance over the normal range

If that doesn't give you enough range, you could put it on an old dish (http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html). A clear line of sight is your best bet. I remember a local Ma Bell having to move their shiny new microwave horn they put up one winter, when a resident refused to cut down his trees after they foliated that spring and blocked the signal.
There was a news article last year about some guys getting 120+ miles using an eight foot dish at one end and a ten foot dish at the other, but I can't find the link.

if its any distance, and your cables are long, expect lag and low speeds. especially if your playing halo on xbox, and using a computer to bring the wifi down to wired, and that system is windows as well as doing anything at the same time.
But if done right it should work

Don't make the Pringles cantenna, it doesn't work as well as the soup can version. Another good site to look at is:Wardrive.net (http://www.wardrive.net/). There are a lot of options there.
If you are going to tear this down after the party and you get a sunny day, no problem. If you are going to leave it up, we can discuss how to weatherproof the AP. Either way the AP has to be close to the antenna.
Just curious, no internet to set up the party? When my group games we just all show up on the same server.

Tupperware :D If you build one of the spiral type you can use a cake container on the back and it comes out looking almost professional.
One problem you will have is getting power to it. *Hint* You can keep your power supply in the house and use the unused pairs in cat5 to pass power. That gives you one waterproof cable to the box. If you are interested I can give you a link.
