View Full Version : The new WRT54G, Dont buy it if you need inbound port forwarding.

This seems to be a good place to bring this up, so here goes. The new WRT54G <Non-Linux> has a major issue most people will not see. Regardless of the web settings, it will not port forward inbound traffic. So if you set up DynDNS for a home security cam, you won't be able to get to it.

It turns out this is a well documented problem with the version 5-6 <you can do a search>. Now I understand that most people will never know the difference since they aren't serving apps, but the device is broken and hasn't been fixed. As one who has been a cheerleader for the WRT54G I am seriously disappointed.

While I was away from home my internet died, and my wife bought a replacement. The replacement has since been returned, and I got the old one running with a new power supply. So I am still on the old linux version I have had for years.

So basically buy anything < v1.5 and you're good for open source...

You can flash linux firmware to v5 and v6 ( such as DD-WRT ).

Even with the reduced memory and such? I thought that after a certain version of 1.5 they trimmed all that down and used a different O/S? Could be wrong since I haven't visited that site in ages.

Yep, DD-WRT has a "micro" version for this purpose. 1.7mb ( flash memory on v5 is 2mb ). They switched to the VxWorks OS starting with v5.

Good info, didn't know that. I think flashing it with a 3rd party load violates the warranty so I returned it. I shouldn't have to do that to get it to work. What upset me the most was the fact they haven't fixed it in two revisions.

They murdered the WRT54G at v5. 1-4 would be gold. Just so you know, they started making the the WRT54GL, which went back to using Linux.
