I finally broke down and bought a GL to replace my aging G. Now that I have a spare G (the original linux version), I want to load some alternative firmware and do some experimentation.

Does anyone have a recomendation on alternative firmware they either like (or dislike)?

TIA,

DD-WRT
HyperWRT
Tomato ( developed by HyperWRT guy )
Sveasoft

You could also run a dedicated firewall (with basically an unlimited amount of options/mods) with an older PC and use the WRT as the wlan ap/wired switch.

I actually have a box set aside for the firewall. Any suggestions on a firewall load? I know about smoothwall, but my information on that might be a little dated...

I personally use Smoothwall SK ( custom build ) and I enjoy it a lot. DD-WRT also makes an x86 version of thier firmware, its not as customizable as SW, its basically DD-WRT for linksys running on a faster box.

Then there are distro's like pfsense, ebox, m0n0wall, etc.

With SW I have loaded these mods... VPNpack, DHCPpack, FullFirewall Control ( this allows you to changes things that you would normally have to SSH for ), Info Display, SW Fixes 1-9, DansGuardian w/AV ( dans is a content filter with AV scanning, awesome mod ), ClamAV, QoS ( great mod as well ), and CaptivePortal ( this forces the client to view a page that I created before surfing the web.. IE "Welcome to the XXX Network", or whatever you want ).

I like it because viruses dont even have the chance to enter the LAN, they get rejected out on the DMZ. Definitions are updated hourly.

I also forgot about HyperWRT + Tofu, that has more options than the standard HWRT.
