I got this new 24 port switch from my friend and it wont work. I just replaced my old swith and hooked up everything the same. I have one cable that goes to my router and 5 others that go to my computer. I cant get my laptop to connect. It says the cable is disconected and when it acctually does detect the cable it just times out. Any ideas? Could it be wrong cableing

Depending on the model (and age), some older switches are set up with cross-over ports to daisy-chain other switches. Look to see is there is a button to enable/disable uplink/cross-over or if there is any unusual marking on that port. Swap the entire cable for a known working one and if it fails move one end back to the computer it was working on. If all of that fails it could be a dead port. If the cable and port works on the known working PC then your NIC on the laptop is most likely the cause.
