View Full Version : Wireless IP Cam ???
Hey guys!
I am looking for a wlan IP cam that has the ability to stream video to the www without the need to login to a control panel etc.
I am setting up a site/blog for one of my reef tanks and am looking for something like this.
Or if yo know of a better solution let me know!
I would also like it to have a decent quality image.

I haven't looked too deeply, but this looks like it might be a consideration:
Linksys IP Webcam (http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1175229403526&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0352686883B01)
I don't know why it's classified as a home automation/security device if it allows you to stream freely, but it does what you want.

I have its predessor, and I am not happy with it. The viewer had to be a custom ActiveX control that came with the camera. I just wanted to stream it directly.

Perhaps you want to skip this camera...unless you want to spend some time with a third-party app that could use the basic $11 cam you find at the store.
I did a little more investigation, and on the cam's Newegg product page (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830142103) I came across this little gem in a user review (color added for emphasis):
Pros: On the upside this is a cool looking camera. I mean to me it screams HAL9000. Motion is reasonably good.
Cons: TERRIBLE color rendering, use of ActiveX for built in web server, Twitchy to set up.
Other Thoughts: I bought this one based on the usually reliable ratings from fellow eggheaders. I wish I could post pictures in this review. The color rendering is terrible. It is not just me, the Linksys forums are full of this complaint. My woodwork looks purple, my greens look brown. On the upside it renders my grey cat just fine I suppose. The choice of ActiveX is a pain since i prefer to use Firefox over IE, but that is not a problem for me in particular since with a little work you can make it work with external programs like WebCamXP. Setup was frustrating and it repeatedly failed to find the camera. Very grainy picture for the price. My advice? Check the linksys forums on linksys home site search for WVC200 and click on Community Forums then search for WVC200 again. You may be glad you did. I'll keep looking, but I don't know...
I ended up going with the Axis 207 I saw it in use on another reefers tank and it worked great. And it does work great on my network, it even has flash memory for embedded apps.
You can view an example of it here @ 30fps.
