Hi all. I recently upgraded my CPU(processor). I used to have a socket478 P4 2.4GHz Northwood. Now i put in a socket478 P4 3.0GHz HT Prescott.

Now i am really surprised with the temperature increase.

I am using a TITAN complete Copper Heatsink and fan.
with the 2.4GHz my idle temp was 35c and load was 50c (these were the absolute max temps i recorded, usually they abit below this)

with the new 3ghz im getting:
50c idle , and upto 80c load !!! . Now i've heard prescotts are hotter. But are they this hot ???. Do you think maybe i didnt apply thermal grease properly ? or should i get a new cpu cooler ?

btw >> this is the cooler i am using :

thanks in advance

There are a few things that can be done to improve thermal reduction on your CPU.

First, what type of thermal grease did you use? I know it's cliche but you do get what you pay for.

Second, did you try to smooth the surface of your heatsink? If you polish your heatsink with fine grain sandpaper until it has a near mirror finish then it will be more effective at conducting heat.

Third, have you verified your airflow since you pulled out the old CPU? I know it sounds unlikely but it is possible that you could have put something back in the wrong place and blocked airflow.

I am using silver grease, btw, whats better ? the silver grease or white thermal paste. My heatsink already has a mirror finish. Airflow is fine. i cleaned the heatsink, removed all the dust, my old cpu was running with a cake of dust.

How much thermal grease do you have on the cpu? I generally use around the thickness of a piece of paper. If you use to much you will trap the heat.

i put a dab on, then i spread it until its quite thin.

My old Prescott was always very hot. As long as you don't overclock, you should be fine.

Do you think i should get a new CPU cooler ? i have those radial fin ones in mind

Try running it with the case off and blow any dust out to see if it helps. Maybe have a fan blowing into the case.

Unrelated but my motherboard has been acting up because the temp sensor is going bad... I get a steady 25C 40C loaded, then it freaks out and randomly goes between 75-90C.

My case has really good ventilation. And i cleaned it out before installing the new CPU. I got fan ducts to the cpu fan, 120mm fan at front and back etc.
