I had this up before I accidentally deleted this thread when changing the boards, so I am reposting it.

Heres the specs on what we did.
P4 3.06, Asus P4B533-v, Corsair 256MB XMS3200, Ti4200, WD 200GB SE w8MB buffer.

I took a thermal take Cu heatsink, cut the fins off welded a 7" long 2" dia. Cu pipe to it. I wrapped it in styrofoam 1/2" for insulation. We rented a 10 liter dewar full of LN2 for the fun.
Liquid Nitrogen is dangerous stuff so dont play with it unless you know what you are doing. and have proper safety gear. It s very cold -196 C, It will cause intant frost bite.

Ok now that the safety warnings are out of the way.
We started pouring in the LN2, it took a few minutes to get everything down to a real low temp and slow the boiling rate of the LN2. The max we got it up to was 4207mhz. It was stable enough to surf net etc but nothing more than that. The hole purpose of this was to show an extreme form of cooling. It is not practical and only done really for fun, just to see if you can. Dropping it down to 3933 it was very stable, running 3D Mark over and over without problem. The score was kinda low... 12K. I would attribute it to the vid card being a 64mb ti4200 and not having any additional cooling. But that wasn't the point of this excercise anyway. It also ran Prime Number generator without issue. I would have played a little longer and switched vid cards to try and get a good benchmark score but I ran out of LN2. Unfortuneatly it was also fun to freeze and break stuff and that used up a fair amount before we got started.... I just got a Prometeia case in and am putting a XP2800+ system in it, afterwards I will revisit the P4 with the Prometeia. I only have a single unit so the Vid card will have to be air or liquid cooled. I do have a Exos unit to play with that could be used for that.

Looking very forward to seeing what the XP2800+ can do!

I was bored the other night and pulled out my old K6-2 450 rig, I didn't care if I burned it so I put the voltage right to it... all 2.7V's of it! and got it to post at 600Mhz.... it actually survived! it wasn't stable but like you said, its fun just to see what you can get out of a chip! :)

who needs liquid nitrogen? try liquid helium. with a boiling point of -452.16F (as opposed to LN2's -195.8), you're sure to get that CPU to a great clockspeed : )

(note: for anyone out there stupid enough to actually do this, i was joking. don't.)

Hi,
Did you happen to run MBM on the system, and see just what the temps were. Just curious. Also what, in your opinion, is the best P4 mobo, for overclocking and just all around features? And what is the case you used to do the laser cutting (ScreenSavers & Logo). Well enough questions. Great to see you got a forum. Usually got some questions about mods you do on TSS.
Thanks
Ren

There are some real exteme coolings out there. Some people actually submerge their computers in a non-conductive oil that they circle around. Or, for the deaf, there is a little peice of engineering marvel that can be attached to a compressor hose. Basicly it shoots the pressurized air in at a certain angle which then creates a vortex, the outside getting very very hot, and the inside getting very very cold. When you direct this you can cool your chip down so far it's unbelievable. If you have a big enough compressor you can even keep it running (only if you have ear muffs tho, :o:D). The only problem is the hot part of the vortex that is expelled. Probably melt the rest of your mobo, but hey, your XP2800+ is a nice and sub-zero temperature.
I also noticed the new UGM v6.0 on the screen savers is vapo-chilled. I liked that =).

Yoshi, when i was it, i saw stunned to say the least. Could ya tell me the name of that program that tells u the Speed? the one u used. it looked quick to open, and thats all i need.

I used Wcpuid it has a function that has the big display. It willre-air again at some point ill find out when. I also used mbm5, and powerstrip to OC the vid.

hey i was just wondering dosen't extreme cold adversly affect the properties of a semiconducter ie. a transiter so woulden't making the cpu that cold acctually hinder its abbility to work properly. i would think that -15C would be cold enough to keep it at and still keep the right electrical properties.

Actually, a CPU can function properly while Frozen.

AstrumPreliator

Well, to a point. At 0K (-273.15 degrees C) there is no atomic movement and electrons can not be passed from atom to atom.
CPU's are already frozen. The silicon and the chip are all solids, which means they are frozen. You can freeze a liquid, but you can't freeze a solid. Your thinking about it's temperature in terms of water, which freezes at 0 degrees C. So what you really mean to say is:
"Actually, a CPU can function properly while *at the temperature of* Frozen *water*" :D :D :D

im not lalking about it freezing im talking about the fact that characteristics change at those temps things such as capacitance, inductance, and resistance all change with the temp these affect how the electrons move from atom to atom but more importantly it changes the bias voltage/current of the transisters which can effect how they switch.

i remeber watching that show....wasnt it at like -27 degrees celcius??? it was rather low, they had something displaying the temp on the front of the case....

that was with the air conditioned case. the nitrogen one diden't have a case

It keeps it about -40C. Its a phase change cooling system. It works essentially the same way as your freezer in yuor fridge.

Is that proc. monitoring prog. freeware? If so, what is the URL for it? I would like to try a little "somethin'-somethin'" out ;-)

There is a slight problem with liquid helium lunacy...

COST!

I don't know about where you are but Liquid Nitrogen is cheeper around here then Helium...

try $100 an ounce  for the Helium

i dunno if this is correct or not but the top guy on the futuremark hall of fame(3dmark) has a cpu clocked at 4522 MHz. no clue how he would get it so high though

Hey thats pretty sweet, but its as you say EXTREME cooling.
I know tomshardware.com got a P4 at 4139 Mhz
, http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20021216/index.html , and it was stable for everyday use, and hardocp.com got a p4 at 4.4 ghz http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDIy

Of course not too say that messing with Liquid Nitrogen isnt ALWAYS  fun!!!!

for basic info right click on my comuter and choose properties.
for a little more info goto run then type dxdiag.
for more you will need a third party app.

A good 3rd party app is www.sissoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra .

gIVES u everything u need to know about ur comp

does anybody know how to overclock a mac- i have a powermac 9500 with a 266 g3 upgrade it overclocks itself automatically depending on the temp of ur case; but only by 8mhtz could i overclock this more, yoshi?

also if u make ur case watertight and submerge it in dry ice that would b kewl

Yoshi...u da man!!! I [size=18][u][b]LOVE PC & Game console-in-one case mods. I wanna see some CRAZY mod done to the Gamecube, Xbox and/or PS2. I used to have a picture of a PS2 that someone modded and put in a window (yes, a window) and a small neon blue light. It wasn't exactly that clean looking b/c it was so cramped, but it was something that I had never seen before.

hmm.. thats not that fantasitc, seeing as how a prommy + a 3.2c will do an average of 4.3gig stable without doing anything really extreme or having a super chip.

but is is a 3.06B after all. i wanna see it on a C
