Modding CD-Rom drives

I recently saw Yoshi mod a hard drive by cutting a window in it so you can see the platters. Is this possible for a CD-Rom drive? im looking to put a window in the top of the case and i think it would look cool to be able to see the cd spinning in my rom drive. Has anyone done this or know of a tutorial to do it. I would try this anyway but my fear is the laser shinning through the glass and hurting someone. Thanks for any help you can give.
