Adding LCD for a newbie

I want to add an LCD that will display motherboard monitor as well as winamp for my songs. I am new at this and i see lots of things that claim to do this but i want some expert help, is there anything i need to know about wiring or is it just buying the parts, plugging the serial cable in and finding a good software? thanks to any help you can provide. i would appreciate it if you could e-mail me the answer as well as posting it. I check that more than i do these forums :roll:
