This was my first big project. It has, PC, X-Box, Game Cube, PS2, Atari 2600, 8-Bit Nintendo.

It is kinda rough in my opinion, I was focusing more on function than asthetics at that point in my mods.
I am currently working on a all new version of this project. I hope to be finished by February. I have to keep the details under wraps for now. But I can say that it will look much better and have quite a few upgrades, additions and general improvements.

Actually we were contacted by a wish foundation for children with life threatening illness about it. A young kid with lukemia asked for it as his wish. If all checks out and its a legit thing, we are going to give it to him.

Bow down to the Boxx! It is my master! Erm......nevermind.

I think it would be cool if all the controller ports were in one place (i.e. top of case). You could do this easily by running controller extensions through the case (But I'm sure you could rig something up yourself :) )

Don't do it Yoshi! That's how my friend got his PC, from the make a wish foundation when he had Lekemia.....hes better now.....naaaaaa I'm just joking......that would be awsome that you guys donate it like that.....although I'm sure it'll be hard for to part with it. And I'll be sure to tell my friend that he got screwed in his wish because he's like the bigest console gamer ever.

P.S. The kid deserves the thing just from halving to loose his hair and get a spinal tap every couple of months. Besides he's gonna need something to play with since he's gonna be missing a lot of school.

well no not really.

Th reason why I said that is because here why.

Xbox 200
ps2 200
PC [with all the gamer needs] 900

Then you would have to buy a bigger hard drive to save ps2/pc/xbox games on and a lil 8GB just for the xbox isn't good.

little odd. but I can see your reason why

is techTV going to let you build a 3rd generation YBoxx next year? If so you should put it on e-bay and give the cash to a charity or something like that because there were so many people including me who would have bought the original YBoxx. People im sure would have bought the 2k3 version if it didn't cost 30K lol. But thats cool that you are giving it to that child.

Hey Yoshi, or anyone else who knows,

I did soomething kinda similar just yesterday, except it only has my NES and 64 in it.

I have a power strip in the box to only have one power cable leaving the box, but do you know of a way to only have one set of AV cables leaving (the red, white [audio] and yellow [video])?

When you (Yoshi) demoed the YB2K3 on tech tv you could switch between all the systems on the fly, could you also explain how you did that? Any production photos could help or even just an explanation, because right now I have to manually switch the cables which is a pain in the @$$.

Thanks alot, this is open to anyone who has a vague idea of how this was done.

imported_Yoshi
07-03-2003, 11:50 AM
In the first box I used a serial switch box (9-pins, you only need 6), to switch between sources.
In the second one I used a component video auto switcher. From Audio Authority (http://www.audioauthority.com/aacconsumers/1154c.html)

Shwang
07-03-2003, 01:39 PM
Ok, I kinda see the Serial switches design in my head, and I don't want to shell out $200 USD in $CAN funds, but the difference between yours and mine is that yours routes through a computer, does it not, and then you have TVOUT from the 8500?

How would I get that to work from just a TV, without routing it through a vid card?

*EDIT* I was looking up Serial Switches and I saw an AV switch box, which is exactly what I need. Do you know of any way to make them, or tutorials, or guides on how do do it.

imported_Yoshi

Yeah. This was Yboxx 1.
It was scrapped for parts for Y-Boxx2.
Which I was honestly not satisfied with.

I am not sure wether or not I will do a thrid version.
If so I think I would compact it to just the 3 consoles and the PC, and try to make it as small as I possibly can.
Or if by chance I got to make my dream mod version of it.... but I dont think Iwill find that kind of funding. I figure my dream mod would cost upwards of 50k....
But its nice to dream.

By the way Yoshi you said that most of your mods TechTV owns. Do you use your mods or do they pretty much just sit in a closet at TechTV because if no one uses them aspecially the Ammo pc would someone be able to buy it. Or because of the shock hazard because of the exposed power supply like with the orgional Yboxx they wouldn't let you sell it. The system is being built without any fans at all, of course, it is water cooled. I am usind 3/8" vinyl tubing with about 8 water blocks. I am incorperating 2 water pumps so that if one seizes up in the middle of the night it will continue to run without overheating. Though this not a conventional water cooled system, instead of using a radiator with fans to cool the, antifreeze in this case, I am designing a resovoir that I will install into the freezer compartment of a mini-fridge/freezer. Each ounce of antifreeze will sit in the freezer for aproximately 40 minutes, cooling to below 40 degrees farenheight, hopefully, then be recirculated through the system. I am also going to use pretty much every computer mod you did, Yoshi.

I any of you might have any suggestions I would be glad to take 'em.

I put an Xbox in my main computer. It maybe of some use to you. scifikg's xbox in a PC (http://www.scifikg.com/xboxinpc/xboxinapcgallery.htm). You might want to consider replacing some of the older systems with emulators. I know you probably want to use the original controllers and game cards, but emulators will save alot of room. You could probably mod serial ports to use the old controllers anyway. You'll probably need to buy a TV card or 9800Pro All In Wonder so you can get video in.

I am also putting my xbox inside my computer case. I purchased a SuperMicro SC750 on ebay for around $50 shipped. Pretty good for a full tower, standing 26.5 inches tall. I have to say that scifikg has inspired me to do this mod because I had the idea in my head but then I saw the pics of his I knew I had to do it because the amount of functionality is going to be very high. I am making the comp a server, it will have a P4 2.4c, Intel PBZ (don't know exact model number)800MhzFSB mobo, with 512mb dual channel pc3200 to start with, might add more later. Anyways about the xbox, the mobo is mounted onto the side panel on the upper portion. It's really cool because the side panel doors swing outward and it looks really cool to see the xbox sitting there. I mounted the xbox PSU to the top of the case, I am not wiring the xbox to the PC PSU cuz its only 350 and pluggin xbox into the wall doesn't really bother me for now. I haven't really looked around on the net that much but I am in the process of extending all of the xbox's wiring. My wire stripper only goes up to 20 gauge and the xbox wires are much higher gauge than that so where can I get a wire stripper that supports 20+ gauge wiring. I searched ebay but all I found were these dumb "automatic" wire strippers that probably don't work very well at all since you can Buy It Now for $5-$10. Anyways enough rambles from me!

scifikg
02-17-2004, 08:13 PM
Sounds like a cool project holtzboy. ;) Post pics in the gallery when your done. I'd like to see how you mount everything. As for wire stripping, I like to a nice pair of sharp wire cutters. It takes a little bit of practice to figure just the right amount of pressure to apply while simultaneouly pulling on the wire, but it is much easier. I got mine at lowes. It looks a pair of plyers with the cutter near the joint only the main plyer part is missing.

holtzboy
02-18-2004, 05:58 PM
I went to Home Depot and found a wire stripper that goes up to 26 gauge and it fits the dvd/power eject button wires perfectly.. I beleive the others are this size or larger so I will be soldering for a long long time!

I will post some pics of it after I get all the wiring done. I am also getting some blue uv reactive ide cables and have cold cathode lights to put inside so I might as well wait on the pics till its pretty much all done so its like BAM!

Whelp, depending on what card you have you may or may not be able to. You also need a A/V selector somewhere so you can choose which console is being sent to your video playback device (TV, monitor, what ever)

As for cooling fan intake in the front, exaust in the rear and make sure that all systems have some sort of cooling on them.

I would like to build one, but, i was wondering if there was a way to use the main processor in a regular compuer, as they are more powerful than an Xbox's processor is. I think if someone could figure out a driver for the drives of the xbox, ps2, gamecube, we could really help Yoshi make a killer 3rd Edition of the Y-boxx. I've been thinking of doing some programming anyways, does anyone know of a way to build drivers, a how-to, or something, i've writen programs, but not drivers, please let me know, also dragon of ice has a great idea, to use the same drive for all the systems, but that is more of an emulator thing. Let me know guys, preciate it.

I have a friend who did that same thing, and he said he has that same problem sometimes. But couldn't verify if for you myself because I've never tried it.

would there be any way to put your old mod instructions on your website considering when techtv and g4 merged they got rid of that stuff?

The one second delay is from the software acting like TiVo, if you turn that option off it is instant. I have the ATI All In Wonder 8500DV and I love it. Once you get the settings right it works great.

Hey, could you put up a link to the specs? I'd really like to make one since I have everything but the XBox!

Well TechTV is dead. Is there anywhere else you could list the story of how you built the first boxx?

TechTV isn't dead. It's just changed to G4TechTV so you can still get most of the best shows from both networks. (ex. The Screen Savers, Anime Unleashed, Cheat!, Arena, etc.)

TechTV is dead, everyone knows it. G4 screwed everything up, they fired almost every host that we love, and they trashed the TechTV website, so we no longer have the great show archive that they used to have.

could i possibly get a better explanation of how the power was wired from the psu to the individual game consoles? i read the article on the screensavers website, but the only details it said concerning that was that the power leads were soldered.

I have to say that now that my PS2 laser has gone the way of the dodo, i may just try what Yoshi and you all are brave enough to do. I may just forgo a case and build something that will dissipate the serious heat that all the elctronics will create.

TechTv is crap now, by the best of both networks you mean the screensavers and Call for help but they cancled call for help. G4 doesn't have any good programing of the own.
Do you realy want to watch a hours of people try and be good at video games, i rather just play them my self. At least if you put G4TechTv in google it says don't you mean: G4 TechTV. This is all G4 is to me:

Hi, I want to put my PS2 in my new rig that I'm making, Unfortunantly G4 has decided to screw up Yoshi's Boxx's Review and all the pictures are dead. I am specifically interested in how he arranged the Controller Cuircuit/Unit into the front of the Case. What I want to do is put the Controller Cuircuit/Unit down with the Front USB Ports @ the Bottom of the case and the 36 pin flat ribbon cable doesn't go that far. My question is that if it's possiable to extend this cable and how would I go around to do that and also, the Power switch, The one that you flip on and Off in the back, How did Yoshi set that one up? Did he just have it always on or did he route it around to the back (*If thats possiable)?

Thanks

it should be easy to rerount that switch...but i have no idea about the ribbon cables :(

the switch can just be cut...the wires then stripped at the end...and extended with some spare (or that u bought) wire

So in order to extend this part:
http://www.gameconsolerepair.com/ps2powerplug1.5.jpg
I have to strip the wire and extended it with what type of wire?

As for the Data Cable, it looks like this:

If I have 2 of those couldn't I'just strip of one end of one and the opposite side of the other and connect each with the same wire used for the extension above?
