I run windows XP Home edition. I tried partitioning and installing freebsd, but I couldn't get it to boot to my second partition. When I tried to install freebsd, it just installed over windows xp. I couldn't even get it to install. It would only install like half way.

WinXP Pro - gaming computer
Win98 SE - Athlon XP 1200+, because my parents need to run old applications (from Hong Kong) and they are futzy with XP Pro

I use to have an Athlon 500Mhz running a dual boot Win98SE (Chinese) and Win2K Pro (for programming in Java, C++, and LISP for school)

I want to try my hand at Linux, but haven't yet.... I keep putting it off :roll:

OS || (What you use it on)

Win XP Pro on All PCs/Laptops, would like to dual-boot Linux on the next newer machine so I can confuse myself more.

<rant>
(The last time I tried this, I didn't have drivers for the LAN card, and they were too big to download from another PC to put on to a floppy and put on that machine...after not being able to get it to uncompress on the Linux machine, I went out and got a CDRW disc to save it...that worked!)...laf, at least I didn't need any CD drivers! haha. But then, no install.exe (not that I expected any....I've used UNIX quite a bit at school (Solaris, DEC/Compaq), but mostly just to compile C++ code...and more as a user than an administrator), trying to prep the install and install the program, I had to make/make install prior to the actual installation, but when I found out no compilers were installed, I had the same problem as above (file size, cannot download without a LAN card)...when I finally got it in, it required another compiler...after it refused to install... I gave up.)
Now...Linux is cool. When it works ... (well, ok, I admit, when there's not a primarily-Windows guy like me at the keyboard) And the way I learned how to work with, install and troubleshoot hardware and software on a PC/Windows...by myself... I would love to get into the linux world at home and try to self-learn this thing now. phew! (lol...is it just me, or didnt ya Linux guys out there have similar problems when you first started with this o/s!...i assume many years ago..lol) I ain't givin' up.
</rant>

ok...there's the long-winded answer. ;-)

- How 'bout Microsoft Bob? Actually.... I've never used it, so I don't know how bad it was, or why it failed. Maybe it was just too simple?

- Re: Win ME, that was another O/S I've never used (I was using the Win2000 preview at the time)... just curious, why's it bad? I've seen it in action on a PC I've worked on a couple of weeks ago, but very quickly, as I've formatted it to put XP on. (I'm guessing frequent crashes?, since that was the problem he was having)

yeah, i used to work at compusa. i constantly had people complaining TO ME that their system wouldnt work right. every time i asked them what OS they were using it was "Windows ME". and it got really annoying because dumb people couldnt figure out how to say it. it was always "ME" to them instead of "M. E." stupid @$$holes!!

I always thought it was Microsoft's "play on words" to call it M.E. = ME ... like "Windows made for ME" .... user friendly-like name. Although, yeah I pronounce it M.E. Now, XP ... they say it's "Windows eXPerience" ... if that's really what it's for, I don't know.

3.1
95 - NT (oh yeah, Bob)
98
ME - 2000
XP

yeah...that naming scheme makes sense. :roll:
