for gaming, is exactly the way my system is set up, A dual setup would be sweet, but if you have the money for a dual setup....you might just want to go with a single cpu setup, and go with a amd athlon 2800+....as for boards I would say Asus or Epox....prefarably Epox....I think you can gain more with EPoX. Next focus on the video card.....if you cant spend the money on a 9700 pro, get a 8500LE, you wont be dissapointed. And from there you can pick out some other things....maybe an 80 or 120gb HD.....

i recently switched from a p4 to a athlon xp and i am very happy with amd. Yeah i would have liked to have dual processors too but that was a little out of the budget at the time

one processor should be just fine. With dual processors you have to remember that with windows xp you would have to pay an extra 90 bucks for a dual processor version of xp. Also if the games or applications aren't designed for a dual processor set up having two processors won't do you much good.

You mean a dually setup...Like this:

:D

Yeah, it was free for me, but would I have dropped 500 bucks on the mobo and two MP 2400+'s? Probly not. Dually's are cool, but they still have problems.

Good choice with the AMD chipset! AMD's rule at games. I'm sure you knew that but don't go with the P4's. I have a AMD 2100+ with a GB of DDR PC2700 and it runs like a dream. I use Kingston memory...the best. I'm an certified computer and network specialist. I have been working with computers for 11 years. Do yourself a favor and go with my specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon 2400+
RAM: 1 GB PC2700 Kingston RAM ( you won't notice a big difference between 2700 and 3200).
Video card: Gforce FX 128MB
Hard Drive: Large size HDD
Mobo:MSI KT3-Ultra ARU
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer or Audigy Platinum 2

Trust me you won't be dissapointed!!!

Good choice with the AMD chipset!

I don't know. The AMD chipsets are pretty dated, stuck at the 266MHz FSB. But if you want a good AMD 762 MP system check out this mobo:

will be nice when games accually utilize dual Proc. for now.. it would be worth just gett'n a dual mobo, and 1 proc.

then once software is out that can use it... oooo yaaa...

Im running an Athlon XP 1800 with an Asus A7V8X which is a 400FSB with DDR 3200. It's a pretty fast system for gaming but I think I need the GeForce FX to see how it really runs.... :)

Im running for my gaming pc:
2600xp(333fsb)
MSI KT4 Ultra(KT400chipset)
512mb's 3200DDR(corsair)
GF4TI 4200
40Gig WD HDD

Many people said that MSI's were crap but i think they spoke to soon, i havent had any problems with this board yet.
If your looking for a nice gaming machine that wont break your bank, look into MSI, and a lower speed XP chip maybe a 2400(2.0ghz) or a 21/2200. If you dont get branded ram you can pick up a stick of 512/3200 for around 100bucks and GF4s and lower end ATI's are going pretty cheap now..

Keep us posted on what you decide.

If you want a gaming system get a Intel set up with an Asus P4G8x deluxe.

Go with the Intel P43.06 with HT. It will actually be worth your money. And will LAST.

You are messed up. A large hard Drive? Be specific. And the GeForce FX!! :o Not only is the card not out yet but it sucks. It barley beats the 9700. When the 9800 comes out it will be smashed, shreded, and completly destroyed. Even Alien Ware turned it down for the 9800.

1st of it is Aleinware, doof!

Second of Alienware did not absouletly refuse the Fx you can choose the FX if you want too.

Wait until the P4 800mhz FSB line comes out. You can then get a P4 2.6 with HT for 150 dollars. With that get an ASUS P4G8x Deluxe. That will be the best.
