Side panels with wet glue.
You can see the bae and lid behind them as well as the corner molding pieces.
The base, lid and corner molding are solid walnut.
The side panels are made of 1/4" finish ply.

For the veneer to bond well it is important that you apply a even coat that covers the entire workpiece. You dont need to use a lot just make sure it is even.
imported_Yoshi
03-18-2004, 11:33 PM
I find a easy way to get the glue even is to apply the glue in a spiral pattern and spread it out with a brush. Make sure the clean the brush with water before it dries so you can use it again.

Here are all the pieces with glue.
You need to let the glue dry completely before you proceed. This is a good place to take a break for a few hours.
imported_Yoshi
03-18-2004, 11:37 PM
Cut your pieces of veneer slightly bigger than your workpiece. This will give you a very clean edge when you trim the excess off.
imported_Yoshi
03-18-2004, 11:41 PM
To get the veneer to stick to the workpiece we will use a regular iron.
Set it to high heat level.
What you are doing is heating up the glue we applied to the pieces and let dry. It acts like a hot melt glue. You can also buy glue sheets that you can iron between the layers but it is not as easy as this way. With this method you can also do very intricate inlay work. As you can trim the inlay pieces afte the glue has been applied to them.

Here is the base, with the padauk veneer, before it was trimmed.
I also used a padauk veneer on the top of the lid.
imported_Yoshi
03-18-2004, 11:46 PM
Why cover the walnut you ask?
I like the contrast in color between the padauk and the walnut that is still visible on the edges and the corner moldings. I also felt it worked with the pau ferro rosewood veneer I used for the side panels.

With the motherboard in place, I was able to measure the areas I would need to cut out for the back panle connectors and the dvd-rom drive.

Here are the all the panels.
Front and back cut out all veneer trimeed and sanded with 360 grit.
imported_Yoshi
03-18-2004, 11:52 PM
For the DVD-ROM cover I used a contact adhesive. Since the plastic wouldn't be able to take the heat of the iron.

Here all the pieces have been coated with tung oil.
They need to dry over night before I rub them out with a 0000 steel wool.
Then the final assembly of the parts.
And run test.

I will take the finished pics this weekend.
I lost my camera battery charger... need to go get another so I can take the final pics.
I want to tweak the case a little bit more also. I need to add more airflow, and I am thinking of doing some carving in the lid.

looks good but what is guna be inside of it
Nice write up Yoshi. This makes me excited for tutorials and shop notes on the future site.
The Tung oil really makes that wood look nice. Also, have you considered covering the fans and other componets that you'll be adding with a "wood grain sticker" (for lack of a better term)? In a recent all white computer (painted inside and out and HDD's, video cards and all wires) I did for my God-Father (a priest no less) I bought a few sheets of white paper (tracing paper with light amount of glue RPM still at 3200) so that everything is white that could be. I could see you doing a similar thing but with some sort of wood grain sticker (although on second thought anything with wood grain may be too heavy but it might be worth checkign out.)
It'd give a nice "all wood" feeling.
Anyhow I look foward to seeing it completed. :D

Thats some mighty fine wood work. What tools did you use to make this? I wood ;) also like to know how you cut the square holes for the cdrom and back of the motherboard?
imported_Yoshi
03-20-2004, 11:46 AM
Whats inside it is a
Via Epia TC mobo
512MB DDR266 RAM
40GB HD
CD-R/RW DVD drive.
Its finished except for the extra fan I will install and any carving I decide to do is bonus. I will probably glue veneer over the fixed area of the fan. For the blades I will see. You dont really see them much when they are spinning anyway. Maybe use a clear blade fan.
I cut the square holes using a jewelers saw. You drill a pilot hole in the waste area and feed the blade through. Then tighten it back up and start cutting. You can get extremely intricate details cut with these. They come in a variety of sizes. If you plan on using this modding, you would want to get one of the deep framed ones.
I think a really good Keyhole saw might work well if you had issues with the depth of the jewelers saw. not as precise though.

Yeah I really want to. It will b4e a personal thing though. I tried to get techtv to foo the bill for a all out wood case but they balked at what I pitched to them.
Madagascar Ebony, Figured Maple, Kingwood, and Afzelia Burl.
If its out of my own pocket it will probably end up being figured maple with cocbolo and ebony accents. That not on my plate in the near future though.

A handy alternative to steel wool is Scrotch-Brite pads.. they make one that is comparable to very fine steel wool:
http://www.reidtool.com/store/store/listCa...idCategory=7705 (http://www.reidtool.com/store/store/listCategoriesAndProducts.asp?idCategory=7705)
I use them all the time and got real tired of the steel wool rusting my washing machine from the steel wool fibers getting in my clothes..
BTW, the ultrafine works excellent in restoring a burnished alumin case if there's a cross grain scratch

Yoshi,
Your pc is very awsome. I was wondering if you installed a thermometer in the case so that you can monitor the temp. inside? The only reason I asked is because I was considering building one of my own, but i was afraid of overheating issues, and the wood catching on fire. Maybe you used components that won't have that problem, but I was just wondering. Also, when I saw it on The Screen Savers I went on-line to find a picture and did a search on google, and found where someone has made wooden pc components, you might wanna check that out, and you could have a complete wooden pc.

Would it be possible to fit a decent gaming PC in to that size of box? Im thinking of building a small PC that would be easy to take to LAN parties.

its not mine its a guys at a LAN party igot tohere in washington by thelooks of it it probly isnt very heavy though probly as buch as a normal computer in a aluminum or steel case but from what ive heard(never seen it personally) it has no cooling problems and he uses it as his hope desktop also ive been thinking about getting somthing like that done but my volcano 11 is too big for something like that.
also Yoshi i want to thank you for doing this project im doing one for my moms 733 off brand celeron (but its not as samll) and i like some of the stuff you did like the edge trim i think i might do that myself. you rock!

Oh ok, it looks like it'd be kinda heavy to me.
Thanks archer. I think i might make a case about that size. It will be nice to have a PC that is small and easy to take around.

What made me what to make the Lament Configuration MOD case? I will try to give you the readers digiest verson...
Well going way back, 2 of my favorite writers are H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker. Well since Lovecraft died in 1937, I can not expect to see anything new from him. After reading the Books of Blood by Clive Barker, I had to seek out his other works and I found
"The Hellbound Heart"
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0061002828.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
which is what the movie HELLLRAISER http://www.midmar.com/8.29hellraiser.jpeg is based on. The idea of a very fancy one of a kind childs music box being transformed in to a gateway to hell was great and once I saw Boug Bradley as Pinhead, http://www.theflyinghellfish.com/_uimages/pinhead.jpg I was caught hook line and sinker on this movie.
Every since then I have tried to get my hands on anything Hellraiser I can. Encluding my action figures, DVD's, Original actor used script (not sure which actor or actress), my plastic copy if the movie used box, and my prized Hellraiser DVD personally signed by Doug Bradley, just to name a few...
So you could say I have been slightly obsessed with this for a long time. I have always wanted to do something big to honor the writer, actor and idea of Hellraiser and one day I just said to myself, I am going to turn the Lemant Configuration cube into a fuctional PC and make it cool...
I started thinking about how I could do it. I called my brother who has worked with wood for years and after about 4-5 and about 10 hours of working this my brother, the box you have seen was designed and I got right to work on it...
This is the short version of how this box came to be...
