 When i was little i was forced to use widows of every sort but now that i've gotten older i get to make my own choices and one of those is to say bye bye to windows for everything but gaming and gaming only. My new choice for just about everything is the mighty RED HAT LINUX 8. i've tried some others but red hat comes out on top of the massive bunch. This is my favorite but what are yours? i got so into red hat that last year i painted my walls with a huge 6 foot big red hat logo. these wall were only in my computer room though. I have a huge steel door with a digital locking system, so that nobody can disturb my linux machine of power.

Novell netware. Its been around a heck of alot longer than winblows has.
If not novell netware. Unix is by far the best.

I've just made Gentoo linux my distro of choice.....it's more aimed at the power user, professional type person in mind. It compiles EVERYTHING for your computer specs in order to get the best optimization as possible. It's a little bit difficult to install if you don't know what you're doing but they do provide some very nice faqs and walkthroughs.....you learn a lot about linux in the process. I reccamend you check out gentoo.org if you're a power user.
If I were to choose another distro it would be Mandrake 9 or SuSE 8.2
I would reccamend against Red Hat 8 Along with almost totaly cripling KDE they released it with quite a few bugs.
BTW I don't even have Windows installed at all.....they only time I might ever consider reinstalling it is for Visual Studio but I kinda like programming in linux. And there are ways to play most new games coming out on linux such as Trans Gaming's WineX. And you can run lots of windows applications with it too.

Suprising enough, most servers out there are Windows...

um the user end ie non server machines the servers that most of us access the data from are prob sysco servers, or unix based machines of some sort. I know that windows has the pc market but not the server market not stable enough
Yes. If I can find that article I will post it.
I don't know much about servers and such, but I did a search on Google and found this Web Server Survey (http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_survey.html) done by Netcraft.
Seems that as of July 2003, the only software beating Windows is Apache.
Mind you though, that Apache's lead over Windows is really big.

I know windows has its problems, but for an OS of that magnitude it's gotta have some errors. I like xp pro, just keep it updated and you'll be fine! The compatibility is awesome, and the Tech support is Hilariously BAD! Plus- all the crud in the world is pretty much for windows! Get a nice desktop pic and live with XP! (dual boot linux!)

considering the laughing emoticon he put in there, I imagine he's joking around, referring to IE as Windows, since it's very integrated, and almost the same thing. lol.
Anyway my opinion...Although I like open source and choice, I'd have to say WinXP. It's pretty stable, is compatible with most programs and game out there and is easy to use. I like and use Linux, but they need to become a little more user friendly to rate good in my book. It's also a very stable operating system, but my "rating scale" also includes the common user, not just me...and as Linux distributions are getting easier and easier to use...when I see an install as easy as double-click here to install...like installshield, then I'd rate it higher....the common user probably doesn't know how and have to compile the code, create a makefile then install. But.... it's getting there....and when it gets there, it'll be some serious competition for Windows.

i only use netware because of its great IPX functions. I use it for a fileserver and ftp/http server. Its great cause windows and mount the drive very easy. Linux can mount the nfs with NCPFS over IPX.
Its way secure. I mean comeone. Yeah the old versions were junk. I have netware 6. works like a charm.
Novell for serving WIndows for gamming, Linux for fun. I might switch to MACS. cause its unix, and supports alot a games. Im tired of using winex on linux

Well, I know a lot of you are going to hate this, but......
I think RedHat Linux 9 (standart) is the best OS for a smallserver, but for my daylie use i have to go with Windows Xp, is Easer and it suport all my hardware, i can see any moovie, an play my games.
But for my small Web server i use RedHat 9, not because is extreamly cool, but becouse is free, and once you get use to it you can do almost every thing that Windows 2003 does in the same time.
so Linux for Small server, Windows Xp, for the rest stuff

Uhh....Technically...Netware is not an OS.
If Novell would have developed a true desktop OS, I think they would be almost as big as Windows.
I vote and *nix is better than any doze OS. However I have spent some time with OSX and I love some of the features and I totally reccomend that for young kids to learn on a system like this rather than Doze. So basically I'd say this
1. *nix (linux, unix, blahnix)
2. BSD
3. OSX
4. Anything
5. Doze

the site does not track windows vs. apache. It tracks microsoft's Internet Information Server vs. Apache. Apache is available for many different OS's *nix, windows, etc...

If all other os were made prior to XP and XP came along, people would claim that XP is the best, but it's not cool to say anything Microsoft or what is to be considered main stream is the best. I vote for XP and my other would be 98 simply because the kernel it was written on is what I think was far superior than other versions.
