Lately I have been using a cheapo scroll mouse non optical instead of my microsoft optical mouse....Its a USB mouse and at random points it just decides to die? This mouse is not old, i only bought it a couple months ago. Now ill be doing something and the mouse will just shutoff...and not come back on....and it pisses me off...because when i reboot, It comes back to life for a while to i reboot again....Sometimes i get an error like USB device not recognized....Does anyone know what the problem could be and why its not working for???

lol, nice answer n0strax, but if you just got the mouse, it's probably still under warranty. just call microsoft and ask for a replacement. They'll get some info and have you send the mouse to them then they'll give you a replacement pretty quickly.

if you're lucky, they might not even want the mouse back and just send you a new one for free (i got a free microsoft natural web keyboard like that, can't remember if i paid for the shipping or not). then you can have an extra mouse to practice mods on.

Also, if you're just fed up with microsoft, take apeter's advice and get a logitech mouse, i have like 5 logitech mice, and only one has broken so far because of a power surge (which killed the usb on my microsoft keyboard and everything attatched to it  ), unfortunately that was my good mouse, so all i have left are the 2 button mice with the web wheel. still good brand though.

Is your USB port dirty?
I was having the same kind of problem with my optical mouse; it would work, then stop, then start working again.
I used a little alcohol on all the contact surfaces, and that took care of it.

hmm....ill have to try that out...see right now its lying below me (still connected) and the red light is on with it and everything, and as soon as i use it it will turn off...then if i tilt it to the side, it will turn back on...but then off again until an error comes up on my puter thats says USB device not recognised...

i had the same issue with a m$ optical mouse, i didnt havt to reboot only unplug it and plug it back it. after a while the mouse just died, so at that point i figured it had nothing to with my system and the mouse was just bad. since i didnt buy the mouse no big worries here, i just bought a cheap ps2 optical one.

I have had the same problem with one of my mice (also a MS optical). The real problem is a short in the cord. I just went to the place I bought mine and had them replace it. For some reason they must short out really easy. It is in the plastic mouse part where the cords meet in there. That is exactly what was causing my problem. You should think about that.

ya "hot swapable". also look in device manager under "view by recorces" then IRQ's. see what USB is sharing with.

I use the Log. MX-700 with microsoft intellimouse explorer software... the reason in do is because that software allows me to program all the extra buttons on the MX-500/MX-700 mouse for "program specific"

meaning.. for WMP, i can make the large thumb button.. "pause"
for Splinter Cell, i can tell it it's "space bar"
for rtcw, large thumb is "needle" and small thumb is "MP-40"

ect... it own3z.

First check the type of USB. Certain USB 2.0 hardware is not backwards compatible with USB 1.1 Second I would try reinstalling your mouse software, uninstall your old if you still have it, and update your drivers. The problem might also be that you ended up getting a mouse, which was defective from the start. Check your warranty and try getting a replacement. If that doesn't work them just get the Logitech cordless duo.

Go to hardware manager a see if its detected. Make sure to find updates for its drivers also.
