View Full Version : Media Player Memory Usage

Has anyone ever wondered how much memory thier favorite player uses? Or for that matter ones fav vs. another player? I have; especially since I got 5 of the buggers. I did a bit of a test to find out how much mem each used. Winamp 2.8 came out on top and MMJB was the most greedy. I tested Winamp 2.8, Winamp 3, Music Match Jukebox 7.5, WMP 9, and Quicktime 6.

The numbers you'll see will of course be different with things like skins visualizations and how much music you have in you playlist. Also each program acted differently in the way memory was used when doing things like opening files and interacting with the player. I tried too keep the enviroment as constant as possible for the most accurate results.

Hope Someone finds this interesting.

link is down. However im one of those peeps who wont install 3rd party software if the software came with the OS.. this is how we get conflics.

Even with resorces being used, if were in XP, we should be up to 256MB minimum.. i guess thats the way i look at it.

i would like to see your test results, just when the link is up.

My MP3 Player takes up very little memory . . . usually under 3 mebabytes.

Ugly media player: http://www.laconiabumsinc.com/downloads/index.php

And I programmed it all by my little self ;)

Actually, DirectX 8 or above is recommended :)

Fixed the link.

Something to note: I've noticed that MMJB can actually go up to 26MB at times. As soon as I have more time I'll update the tests and I'll check out LordKaT's player as well.

U ACTUALLY DOWNLOADED WINDOWS MEDIA 9??do u like it?, lot of ppl say that realone player is bad for your system and isnt a good media player. i found it on the contrary. i luv realone 4 playing *.mp3's and *.avi's, although i disliked the "message center" which would actually bring up stupid pop-ups. it only crashed on me occasionally

Actually WMP 9 is a far cry better than WMP8. It has a smaller memory footprint and it starts quicker. Other than that it still isn't a good player. It took more than a minute for it to find all my tracks and it still missed about 300 of 'em (out of 2900). I only use it for streaming media and listening to just a single track.

As for Real One... I find it way to intrusive and I have a great distrust (http://grc.com/downloaders.htm) in that company. I like the player itself though. I might add it to the test page when I get around to updating it.

I use MMJB. i really like it. It is really nice and intuitive. It is just a matter of preference.

WMP 9 isnt all that bad, honestly. I like the media library option and the minimizing feature in XP. I just wish it was easier to organize MP3s in the actual folders they sre in. Other than clicking and dragging the hard way any ideas?

Got this in an e-mail. putting it up here so I can answer it all in one shot...

hey man.  that link for your media player.. dosnt seem to be working.  The
reason i want to try it out is because playing .AVI's in WMP9 with Realtec
drivers ( i guess some Divix codec as well) = the audio and video are not
syncing together... its for my new project "the Humidor PC"

Thanks man

link for my media player? Home made? If you're refering to LordKaT's player, then no. I don't have that one. I've been busy with photography lately and I never got a chance to dink around with it. Hopefully he can get his link back up soon.

Try re-installing the latest codec from Divx (http://www.divx.com/). That worked for me when I had that prob. just recently.
