Thanks! :D

dworld: Im just hoping to get this one done. I will have the week from July 3 thru July 11 off and other than racing on the 11th Im working on the desk.

scifikg: Im thinking that I will put two fans on each end 2 sucking 2 blowing hopefully that will be enough.

kerbz: Yep I had an old 486 laying here and the drive was just sitting in it nice and handy when I needed it.

Ah spanky. I hate to break it to you, but the images on you grill page don't show up. You still have them linked to your hard drive.

Ok ran into a snag  for some reason I have no power, am I missing something obvious here is there a ground wire or something I should have run? Or should I just be able to hook it normal even though everything is mounted to wood? I hope I didn't fobar something

P.S. I have only tried one machine I don't want to mess them both up!

kisa

you don't need a metal case to ground to. I would check your I/O area for a bad ground, reseat your plugs, general psu troubleshooting. I do all my last resort power check with the whole system layed out on a wood bench :)

to check your power supply, disconnect it from everything with the exception of one fan, then jump the green wire and a black wire on the motherboard connector of the power supply.

Hope that works. it looks great. I might suggest Steel or aluminum 3-4" pipes with ground flanges for supporting it. that would go well with the very clean look you've got going on.

Spanky

Thanks kisa,
I changed power supplys and that did the trick. I had done some sodering on the wires close in to the actual box and I think I got it to hot.

I have actually got the legs built now and the desk is painted. I just havn't posted anymore pics. ( to busy working on it) I am posting this on the machine I was having trouble with so all is good now. except for a funky floppy drive (yes I still use them) but that is minor.

Thanks again

*turns up nose at spanky for using a floppy drive, suggests viagra or enzyte to turn it into a more functional Flash drive or Hard drive. :)

Also notifies the rest of the Yoshi crew about some other politically incorrect terms and their "new" monikers.

This mod was done before, a bit different from what you're doing. I'm going to see if I can find the link for it and post it here. Maybe this guy can give you some advice and what to look out for.

BTW: Welcome to the fourms and from what I'm seeing this desk mod is going to be cool!

Looking good!
I have a 5 1/2" floppy drive and a another drive from a 486... looks like a floppy, but th hole where you put the floppy is almost 2 times as long! Can anyone tell me what this is? (I still have games 4 it! :o)
Anyway, good job on the desk mod, and post some more pics!

Ok folks pretty much got it done (well as done as you ever do) I ordered the glass today should be done in a day or two. I still plan on lights and lighted fans when the accounting department says so. Let me know what you think!

Also thanks for all the response on this as I said when I first started. Im a good starter poor finisher your encouragement helped a lot.

Great job spanky!
The only thing I would
even think about changing
is to get rounded cables, or
fold the flat ones "up", so
you can't see as much of
them.
But a really great job man.

Great job, and i love the concept, i was thinkin about doing one my self, but i got hung up over heat issues so i scrapped the project, by the way, how you dealing with heat? I can see you have several fans in there, but do you think you might go with water cooling, or thermal electric in the future?
Looks great so far, would look sweet with some lighting in there, but personally i would have gone with some frosted acrylic instead of clear glass, would give a better glow :D

Spanky
07-16-2004, 11:37 AM
Stang_Man,

If you notice the PSU's are piped out and somewhat seperated from everything else. Also its hard to see in the pictures but there are 2 fans at each end of the "case" 2 sucking, 2 blowing. Without the glass in, the CPU is running at 95 deg. F I don't know yet what will happen with the glass in! :D

Spanky
07-20-2004, 05:15 PM
Just got the glass in today! I've been running DVD's on both machines for the past hour and the CPU temp hasn't gone above 107 degs F. and the MB temp hasn't gone above 89 degs F. in case anyone cares. :D

WVJammer
07-21-2004, 02:39 AM
Cool spanky. I was wondering
what kind of temps you were
going to have once the you
got the glass in.

Awesome Job, but where did the fan grills go. You gotta use them somehow, if the wife doesn't mind ;). Did you use MDF for the casework or is that something different?

Spanky
07-21-2004, 11:59 AM
The Fan grills will go on a different project I,m working on. (no the wife doesn't mind) B) and yes it is MDF that I used for the case and most everything else. Its a heavy old tub.

So nice. Makes me long for my L-shaped desk. Each computer needs it's own large desk space.

Raladine
03-14-2005, 03:06 AM
Spanky that is incredible. Just one question though....Do you pull a Dukes of Hazard sort of deal to get behind the thing or just climb under? I had to ask since both ends are against the wall.

Spanky
03-14-2005, 08:33 AM
Actually thats just an optical illusion. There is at least 4 feet between both walls and the desk plenty of room to move around it.

And thanks for the great comments everybody. :D

kennyt772
03-14-2005, 08:57 AM
dude this is awsome. did you make everthing so it can be moved around?

Spanky
03-14-2005, 09:57 AM
No its not to mobile. Its extremely heavy. I only plan on moving it one more time and thats into the space where my office will go. I will then have to build my office around it. If I ever get tired of it I will have to break out the chainsaw.

kennyt772
03-14-2005, 10:12 AM
well what i meant was are the monitor's cords run directly into the mobos or did u make it tyo where its eaiser to swap out monitors and mice?

Spanky
03-14-2005, 11:34 AM
Oh sorry, actually everything on it can be upgraded or swapped out in just a few minutes. Even the motherboards and drives can be swapped quite easy.
