Yea this is my first mod i had an old dell (AHAHAHAA) that i was usin for well nothin so i decided i needed a server and it had one of those boring as dell beige cases so time to MOd. I got most of the hard work done im just lookin for suggestions i alrdy know i need to paint it and hook up power cables ( right now some have been cut to get out of power caseing) its just goin to be a server im gona use some nics then hook up to a router but it is just a box with a mobo hd and ps in it now. i cant fit a cd rom drive in it i dont rly want to get an external enclousure so any ideas on that would be liked.

im just lookin for suggestions
What really sells stereo component mods are making it look as stock as possible. I'd stealth the drives and reuse the old cassette player's buttons for computer controls.
Looks cool so far B) .

Yea my first idea was to make the play bottons and all that power and leds stc but the comp im usin has special setup were it is one little board that has power reest and leds i may be able to sodder switchs to it i dont know once i fishish all the exterior stuff. The opening on the one side is the cassette area i need to attack it again i wanted to keep its ability to open and close but the mobo keep hitin when i tried to keep it closed so i took off bracket and now i just need to glur or screw the piece back on i keep all the parts to it so i can put it all back on.
The pic is of the controller this is y modders hate dells cause they make it so u cant do anything to them ___Argh__

I need some help i had to lengthen some of the power supply cabels including the one for power itself. I want to test the power supply before i hook it up to all thes things and short them out or somthin. I know there is a way to jump it by jumping to wires or somthin but what wires this is a dell power supply regular atx. All the pictures i took were when the wires were still cut.

hook up a cathode or a fan up to it
then just cross the green and any black wire on the ATX connector and plug it in...

Yea thanks i tried that on another comp and it worked fine but i forgot im usin dell parts(aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh) welll there is no green wire so i just decided to take the risk and it worked(funny thing is that when i was unplugin it i moved it and the ground(it was just sittin on my desk) hit the ps sparks Aaaaaaahhhhhhh no damnit piece of Sh@t but it was cool it still worked
because i want to make it look alot like the original casette player im usin the volt meter thing that came was part of the player as a led for power and hd. It is low voltage so it works and it has 2 meters for power and Hd. Those fuse things on the side are actually lights so im goin to hook them up to power so it is lighted at all time. (sry bout bad pic i couldnt use flash cause the front reflects light and messes it up even more)

I was thinkin of using this comp as a server putting mandrake on it and stufff but now im thinkin i have another pentium comp i think it only like 200mhz but it will work as a server i think servers dont have to be hela comps im going to turn this comp into a media center kind of comp but that means i have to buy another copy of windows xp (unless someone happens to know how to install it on more comps with still licensing it) only prob with turning it into a media comp is that there is no space for a regular cd rom and i dont feel like buyin a slim (tyrin to spend as little money on this comp as i can)

Got board today had nothing to do so i decided to do somthing that i have been wanting to do for a long time make an ide port. The port can be used to extend the ide cable add another one to it or make an external cd rom without an external enclousre( was going to get one but this comp doesnt have usb 2.0 and i dont feel like usin a cd rom thats read speed would be 12bs that sucks) but im going to use it to install a cd rom on the outside of the case put it on top or somthing. Problem is that i havent tried this thing before just made it took FOrever i have never herd of anyone suin or makin one of these before so i dont know if that means it doesnt work or that it ahs never been thought up before.

IF this setup doesnt work then i can probaly either get a micro atx board or a mini itx i think mini itx cause i will only need what they have built in audio all i will need to add is a tv tuner card and it has 1 pci slot
do u guys thing 128 mbs would be sufficent enough for a media comp or should i go with 256 i would thing 512 would be overkill

i would say get a lil more than 256.....say a 256 chip and a 128
w/e that comes out to be
i have 256 and a 800mhz processor and its kinda slow for media and games...but i get by...

if its running xp i'd go with at least 512mb...especially if you eventually decide to go with a mobo w/built-in video.

I think i have decided im botu to get a new comp for gaming. The one im am usin now is well slackin it only 256 ram 1.6 ghz p4 (sucks for gaming) 64 mb 7000 series grapics(had to replace my old aiw it blow up and didnt feel like spendin bunchs) so it will work for this project and it has more storage once i get my new comp in then i will use it it will probaly be a while and i am going to use mythtv (tivo on a computer) with probaly mandrake linux or redhat then hook it up to tv and use it for pvr and media. (i found that i can use that old comp for a server i will put it in toperware or somthin who knows.

Like I said before once i get my new comp im goin to use hardware from this comp in the project but since i wanted to fit all the items in one case instead of maing a cd rom external. Well i had an old radio (old is the word and big is the case) so now im going to use it for the project i will use the cassette player comp as a server or somthin who knows i dont but i guess im not going to do anymore to this case except put a back plate on it and say it is done. I would put an lcd and put all this fancy stuff in it but that is money and i dont feel like spendin more money i will post that all done pics later once i get a sheet of aluminum to build back plate.

I have finished with all the hard work on the case (i wasnt gona work on it anymore but got board) i decided instead of making a piece for the back plate i jsut used the plate that was used for the case when it was a cassette player. I finally messed up the controller tryin to solder wires 2 it but i rewired it to use the volt meter for leds and some buttons i had for power and reset. The comp is all workin now runnin suse but i decided to use an old 3 gig hard drive ( the comp will be used for server once i get another nic). It is runnin smoth my external setup(exteror power and ide adapter) didnt work i think i just wired the power wrong and plugged the ide cable in upside down(it old cable the doesnt have the missing pin). I need some help though the front is well a bunch of holes i need some ideas for it. Im going to use the power hole and reset hole for buttons but all the other stuff i dont know specially the play rec etc. buttons i have nothin to do with them. The cassette slot will just be the cassette front it is a piece of plexi in a housing so it will look alright.
Back and top
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-7/781055/MOdCOmp2(1).JPG
Front need help with it power switch and reset hangin and the volt lookin thing i wired to be the leds(the meters go up and down when the leds would be active) also installed a button on the lights for the meter it is also hangin out front
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-7/781055/MOdCOmp2(5).JPG
Close up back the (piece of aluminum is cause i made the power hole to big so the screw wouldnt fit just blow out side made plate to hold) the fan is from a playstation 2 holder thing it sucks but it takes air away from ps there is a 80mm that puts alot of air in at the top.

Also has an old cd rom and floppy drive would work for music but not for games(would but dont feel like waitin an hour to load stuff from disc.I know this is off topic but it would be waist to make new topic on it plus im basically done with this mod just need front cosmetics(Any ideas on tat would be liked)
