Okay, I tried dling the SP1 for XP Pro, but it said that my certificate number is invalid, and that I should call windows but I don't feel like being on the phone with them, so my question is is it necessary to DL the service packs, or will just DLing the updates do the same thing? Also, is there a way to get it any other way?

Well the SP1 pack is horribly bad and it blocks some things that you may do on your computer....I wouldnt advise downloading this if I were you....Just stay with XP without any SP for now...

really? what does it block? i like my sp1 and it erases the vulrnerability to go to a webpage that will delete whatever it wants from your harddrive.

You could've gotten rid of that vulnerability by downloading an util called xpdite from grc.com (http://grc.com/xpdite/xpdite.htm).

or I could have just deleted the file that I did delete and solve the problem that way too... :?

SP1 "fixes" some thing that makes it possable to click on a link and have your harddrive erased... Well not the whole harddrive, just every thing in your windows folder. I would make the call.
Dont you just love windos?

actually it can delete any folder that it assumes is on your drive, so i assume it'll do the root directory too...

I have had people come to me with their pc's that are running the pirated so called "corp" edition, and microsoft has made it to where the XPSP detects that cdkey used on that version of windows, and when it detects it, it says the cdkey is invalid. Should I call 1-800-RU-Legit? the ms anti-piracy hotline?

Right now, the only reason I would upgrade to SP1 is to get USB 2.0 support (which, of couse, is 40X faster than USB 1.1). However, I don't yet have any USB 2.0 compatible hardware.

There is other reasons to install SP1, not just for USB.

Yea, I know there are other reasons, but the only I have is USB 2.0. right now.
