ok, first post iwould have posted a while ago but i never got an email notification. i sent it again several times but i still didnt get it. yesterday i looked in my spam folder and there they were. i cant believe my spam filter thought something from yoshi forums was spam! lol :)
anyway im fairly new to mini-itx, but im ready to try. im going to set up a mini linux fileserver and maybe a router using smoothwall. id like it to be as cheap as possibe heres my parts list:
VIA EPIA 800 All In One Motherboard here (http://mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=2#p1602)
Kingston ValueRAM 168 Pin 512MB SDRAM PC-133 – OEM here (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-153-101&depa=1)
SPARKLE POWER POWER SUPPLY MODEL FSP180-50NIV -OEM here (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-424&depa=0)
SAMSUNG 40GB 7200RPM Light and Slim IDE Hard Drive, Model SP0411N, OEM http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-152-008&depa=1 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-008&depa=1)
im only buying a hard drive because i dont think i have any reliable ones lying around. and i now it is real small but is mainly a practice box i have room to grow. for the case im gonna use some case i have lyin around like a broken stereo or vcr. idont need it to be real small. ill recycle a cdrom drive. if anyone sees anything wrong with my configuration or has any ideas to make my box smaller, please tell me. Since i'll be running linux, the memory is probably first to go. thanks

Dont you need a nic to send data out usually that helps some. And a 40 gig harddrive is not small for a server most servers i know for home use are like 10 or less once my nic come in i will have 2 hard drives for 7 gigs one 4 and one 3. FOr a case dont use one get a piece of plexi or aluminum or whatever attack it to that and let it air cool itself.

Don't most of the mini-itx boards have NICs built in?
Yeah, that particular board has it built in. Your specs look fine, and I agree, you could probably get by with 256 RAM.

256 for a server is overkill rly mine(just got my nic in today) has 156 i think (i think one stick is 128 one is 28 dont know). Im gona start a worklog for the case idea i have i need some help with it.

At Ciurcut City youcan get a Western Digital 120GB hard drive for $40 actualy its $120, but there's an $80 rebate! here (http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&u=c&catoid=-10263&qp=0420032981681&oid=71459&m=0)
its cheaper than my 40GB drive!

If its to be used as a router, you will need 2 NICs. One for LAN side, one for WAN side. I guess you might be able to do it with a single, but it would be SO insecure. I really don't think you can do it.

Ok i dont get ur statement anode u only need 2 network jacks one for input(if u have high speed I.E. cable dsl) and one for output(to ur switch router computer what ever). Dont understand the hole lan and wan side y do u need one for both u only need one to send out to his network and he has one built in.

he said he wanted to use the 'puter as a router, hence the need for 2 nics (built in or not)

OH OH OH :P
i c what ur sayin now usin just the comp as a router not using an external switch or anything sry wasant payin attention. I think by router he means just using this as a firewall then using a switch hub router whatever to split the signal. Anyways im gona go try to get that hard drive that is awsome price i have my media comp for recordin tv shows with ony 40 gigs(didnt have money to buy another hard drive) but for 40 bucks a 120 gig that owns.

ok, i'm ready to buy my parts, but stupid me, i didn't think how expensive shipping would be from the uk, $50! does anyone know about an alternate source that i could get this mobo from?
cubby

just did some froogling and found the mobo at compuvest.com. here (http://www.compuvest.com/Description.jsp;jsessionid=aBHFDanzfRRd?ItemID=457 66)
i checked pricegrabber for the merchant rating and it looked likes its a pretty well known site and it has a good rating 3.89 of 5 from 1201 reviews, most of the recent reviews looked ok (4.17 of 5 from 254 reviews in the past 3 months)
has anyone done business with compuvest.com or know someone who has?
