See how i do this...

ok so here is my first real project log... its for Project Ignis (ignis = latin for fire)

ok to start it off i began with a old ass micro atx case, and then drew on some flames... hehe, they are easy and i can do them well, so yup they went on...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/drawn.jpg

then i used the :dremel: DREMEL! :dremel: and cut out the basic shap of the window i plan on using.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/cutting.jpg
after finishing that i got the final cut out
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/cut.jpg

and then came the tedius part... grinding it down.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/grindin1.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/sparks.jpg

after the grinding was all finished up, i had the completed window (well not completely but just a few minor sanding jobs here and there)

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/finished.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/layed.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/side.jpg

dont worry thats not the system that i will be using that in that comp right now, i will be using what is in my sig :D

there will most likely be weekly updates after the weekend and maybe a few here and there... but this will probably be a slow log.... let me know if you have suggestions on the front...

now if these images are too big, please let me know and i will resize them asap...

-={--minor update--}=-

after cutting out all the stamped in steel
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/cutting-nibs.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/sparks2.jpg

I added some steel support for the fan hole before i cut it out next time i have a chance to work on it... the support is to keep the "slits" from falling out

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/sheetmetal.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/withsheet.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/stack.jpg

and then after setting that all up, i went to work drawing the new flames onto the back...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/back-flames.jpg

thats it for now... watch out for more soon

alrighty... new update...

decided to work on the front of the case today, as i wanted to get an idea of where im going with it lol...

i was originally gunna go for just a 120 duct straight to where the radiator was going to be, but i though it would look odd for such a big hole to be on such a little case... so i went with 4 40 mm holes using pvc pipe...

here the first test layout i did...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/testlayout.jpg

and then i glued and sanded down the tubes of pvc
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/aftersandingfront.jpg
remember to wear a mask like i didnt lol
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/aftersanding.jpg

then i slapped on the bondo and let it dry
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/bondo1.jpg

sanded it down smooth, added a thin second layer
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/bondo2.jpg

sanded and ended up with this...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/afterbondo.jpg

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/front-angle.jpg

i think they/it turned out really good, i might add another coat of bondo before paint, but im not sure yet, i have some more ideas for the front that i will be putting into action later this week or next weekend, whenever i go home next hehe

well, the rear of the case doesnt, or should i say didnt, have a rear exhaust fan so i whipped out my dremel :dremel: and cut away...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/rear-before.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/rear-after.jpg
turned out pretty good, and should look killer when i get a fan grill on it...

and then disaster
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update2/side-disaster.jpg
the steel plate i was using to keep all the stamped parts held on, decided that epoxy is not good enough and let go of the pieces... so i decided to just cut the side out in a circle and make one from some spare steel or aluminun or possibly some acrylic or something... ill figure that one out later on, thats all i got done tonight, and will hopefully get some more done on friday or saturday...

let me know what you think.. thanks

Alrighty, let me start of with the finished side panel... cut sanded, bondoed, and sanded again

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/side-cut.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/side-bondo.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/side-finished.JPG

then i began on mounting the radiator....
-------------------------------------------------
first i drew out where i wanted it to be, after a couple of tries got it right...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/test.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/pre-cut.JPG

after some testing, i went ahead and cut it out
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/rad-cut.JPG

then i went ahead and screwed it down, and slid in the mobo (new YAY), here you can see how close of a fit it is in there, it is a tiny ass case...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/mobo-rad.JPG

due to power cords and ide cables, the rad will have to be mounted "upside down"
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/installed.JPG

and here is a shot with the front on, looking into the radiator from the front
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update3/front.JPG

more to come in the following weeks, so yay, more work done, and more to come...

Well because i decided where to mount my pump (in the 3.5 holder) i needed to find a place for my 2 hard drives.. well the top bay, and well i didnt want my 2 hdd's sitting in the top of the case with no air, i decided to make a "hard drive cooler"
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel1.JPG

after the initial fittings (bondo to hold the tubes in place)
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel2.JPG

after cutting them down to size
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel3.JPG

first coat of bondo
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel4.JPG

after alot of sanding, and well sanding
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel5.JPG

and 293847 hours later :P the "final" version
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel6.JPG

and the whole case put together, and stuff

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel7.JPG
Http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/fanpanel8.JPG

i did this last night, so be ready for another update today

Alrighty, got the pump mounted and its in there good :D

i put it in the HDD rack, and then cut a hole in the bottom of the rack to:
A: have enough room, and to bring it down a lil bit, cause it was too tall.
B: to have the outlet of the pump facing down.

so here are the pics

drew up the hole, and cut it...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase1.JPG

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase2.JPG

Test fitted the pump... it works
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase3.JPG

then i added rubber molding that i picked up from "Autozone" to cut down on vibrations, and to avoid scratching the hell out of the pump casing.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase4.JPG

Then came the tricky part... holding the pump in...

What i did was I took some flexible steel "strips" that had hole already in them, drilled 4 holes on the side of the case (2 on each) and inserted bolts.
i was originally going to use nuts on the bolts, but the holes in the "strips" fit the bolts perfectly, and they could screw into them. Then i bent down the ends of the strips about 1/2 inch short... i did this, because when the bolts go in, and the strip is tightend down, it will pull downward and hold the pump in place... here how it looks, not the prettiest thing, but it gets the job done. and no one will ever see the strips, as they will be against the bottom of the cd rack.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase5.JPG

and it all mounted inside the case...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update4/pumpcase6.JPG

Update time... a tiny update, but an update...

i worked on the front again and got the drive bezel cover mounted up all nice and stuff...

heres some pics

after the initial layer of bondo and what not, and some sanding on the top, with the first heavy coat of bondo on the bottom...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update5/front-bondo.JPG

after the sanding the final coat of bondo...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update5/front-done.JPG

and then i sanded down all the rough spots on the front, and re-primed it all...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update5/done-primered.JPG

thats it, i might update friday or saturday... hopefully

thats it for now

Here is an update i posted on bit-tech when hard was down....

Sorry for the lack of updates recently, been kinda busy with moving to my new apt and finishing up school...

so heres what i have been working on for the past 3 weeks... haha, no just about a day or so.

with three fans in the front blowing onto my two hard drives, i noticed that the air would have no place to go besides down into the case... well i needed to change that, so i added a vent...

i started out with the power supply that destroyed my comp in my sig and cut out its vent.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update6/vent1.JPG

then i cut out a hole in the top of the case, and epoxied/jb welded the new vent in place
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update6/vent2.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update6/vent3.JPG

after that a couple of coats of bondo, and some sanding
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update6/vent4.JPG

and then after i got it smooth for the most part, i primed it and here it is drying
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update6/vent5.JPG

and i also got my parts in the mail to make the VU meter, futurlec.com,
and got it up and running, but for now just a teaser pic

Alrighty... decent sized update here...

first off was the power button, i didnt want to use the "stock" one that came with the case as it was huge and ugly. So what i did was fill the stock hole with bondo, make a cone out of paper, and shove the cone into the bondo when it was still wet... then glazed it with glazing putty, drilled a hole for the button and slapped it in there...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/button1.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/button2.JPG

you can also see that i went back and added some putty where there were some minor imperfections.

while doin that, i decided to screw it all, and redo the holes in the front for the third time... as they were weak and kept craking the bondo/paint... this time they arent going to move at all...
following the same steps as before, epoxy, bondo, glazing putty, i redid them.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/bottom1.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/bottom2.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/bottom3.JPG

after that i got both the button and the bottom nice and sanded
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/sanded.JPG

and now it was time for another primering.

a few days later (im slackin on the updates i know) i got some red metallic paint and started the chasis...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/chasis1.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/chasis2.JPG

and a few extras
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update7/rad1.JPG

began painting it and well yeah...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/1.JPG
i dont like to wetsand with anything less than 2000 grit... thats right 2000 this way i have maximum control of how deep i go... yes it may take 2 more minutes to get to where i want to be, but there is hardly any risk of running into bare metal...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/2.JPG
and that is the result of my efforts... looks pretty good eh?

i was pretty pleased with the finish as i did not want to goto a mirror finish due to the fact that my computer faces a window that is behind me... thus a mirror finish would kill me durring the day. Since i was happy with the finish i began on the flames. using the same technique i used on Project Texas Tech (cut out the mask on a sheet of glass and then apply it to the case) i applied the flame mask.

and painted it.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/7.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/8.JPG

after i let them dry i took off the masking tape.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/9.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/10.JPG
from afar they looked beeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful (yes i know the spelling is completely off)

but after closer inspection i wsa rather upset...
they didnt look that good... due to the fact that i polished the panels before applying the flames the paint did not stick all too well. as seen below
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update8/11.JPG

so now i had to strip it down, apply more coats of paint and start over...
hopefully should have the finished result in the next week or so... and till then i bid you good day

Alrighty guys, ive gotten A TON OF WORK DONE... well actually all of it... And im now at Quakecon, and the case is finished...

after making a quick trip to fry's i descovered a fan shroud that converts a 120 to an 80. comparing the 60+ cfm of my old 120, and the 30+/- cfm of a standard 80, i opted for the 70+/- Thermal Take smart fan II.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/1.JPG
after the first coat of paint on the shroud... it was a nasty uv blue...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/2.JPG
a pic of how close the ATX connector and the shroud are... or should i say how much they touch.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/3.JPG
Here is the fan, shroud, and radiator all combined and put together to gt the complete radiator assembly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Next came the paint.
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/4.JPG
After the same steps as before, draw, cut, and place the mask, i painted the flames onto the last panel. they came out relitively good.

The little things now...
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/5.JPG
Hard drives, yes DRIVES, shoved into one bay...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/6.JPG
instead of trying to glue screws for the 3 fans, i opted to buy a 3 fan bay cooler, and use it.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/7.JPG
being the wire whore i am, i cut a large yet small rectangle in the case to run all the wires with out being seen. this includes the wire for the pump, the ide cables and all necessary cords for fans, lights etc.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/11.JPG
because of the res, and its new location (it wasnt getting water to the pump, so I constructed an adapter to have it standalone) i could not place a fan in the fan hole i originally cut. SOOOO instead i made it look like there was a fan there by using wire mesh, and a fan grill. results were very satisfiying...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/8.JPG

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/9.JPG
As a nice final little touch, i decided to make a logo for the 3.5 inch bay.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/update-final/10.JPG
and a night shot.

and here is a wallpaper i made here at quakecon waiting for the network to come back online.

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/wall.jpg

and 1600x1200
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/wall2.jpg

hehe, im a wire whore... and the 80->120 was needed because of the ATX power plug...

i added a cold cathode in the front to livin it up a bit here at qcon...

http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/front-done1.JPG
http://home.comcast.net/~james.kelley2/project_ignis/front-done2.JPG

i think it looks great, and makes the logo really stand out...

YAY its finally finished completely
