Well, Ive finally started on my first mod :)
I went and picked up my case on Wednesday morning (when i was meant to be at TAFE) and I started marking out where I was gonna cut my window out. Then I had to go back to TAFE for another class in the afternoon :( so that was the end of my modding for that day.

On Tuesday I finished marking out my windows, and I cut them both out. And I drilled the holes around the windows for screwing my acyylic in. I dont have any pics of them yet, but ill probably take some tomorrow or the day after... whenever i get a chance.

Friday afternoon I left TAFE early again, so i came home and put the sanding bit on my dremel and cleaned up my cuts, and then I cut the acrylic to shape... Would you believe I broke my last cutting disk with only about 5cm left to cut... Grrr...

I plann on getting to top window cut out in the next few days. As soon as I get both windows in, Ill take some more pics and post them.

All the pics I have so far are here... http://members.optusnet.com.au/chrus3/gallery.html
Ill put more us when i get more.

Today i got myself some more cutting disks, so i cut out my top window. I also drilled screw holes in both windows and screwed them both in. Oh yeah... and i cut the screws so they didnt stick out the back so far.

Heres a pis of my case with the windows in...

Im pretty happy with it so far... excet for a few small scratches... Grrr. If anyone knows how to repair scratched paint, please let me know in my other thread... http://www.yoshi.us/forums/showthread.php?t=9194

So what does eveyone think at this stage??? Anyone have any suggestions???

Looks good Chrus.

You may want to mask the
case next time before you cut.
I know that doesn't help now.
I had to find out the hard way to.

Yeah.. lack of money sucks... good thing I get paid today :) Part of this weeks pay is going to the fan Im gonna put in the top, but i gotta save the rest... The G/Fs b'day is coming up, so I better spend some money on her.

Well if you let her use it....

Ill let her use it when its finished... But only as long as Im there to supervise ;) But shes not really that into computers, so i dont that she would accept that for her present. Her brohter on the other hand wants me to hurry up and get it so he can come over and play Doom 3.

Should I put a blue led fan in the side window??? Im gonna put one in the top window, but Im having second thoughts about the side window... What does everyone think??? And where should i put it if i do???

Heres the window in question...

Didnt doo much today... Just put a fan in the top window. Was gonna buy 2 fans, and put the second one in the side window, but the computer shop was sold out. And I couldnt find anywhere that had grills (jaycar is getting some tomorrow) so I put the fan in anyway, and I think ill leave it without the grill on it.

Some pics...

Oh yeah... its a blue LED fan too... I just dont have a power supply (or anything else for that matter) in it at the moment, so I cant turn it on yet.

And I cut my finger on something sharp when i was trying to put the side back on :( Stupid sharp bits... Grrr...

why such a small top window..u cant even see in it with the fan there...personally id cus it bigger

Chrus
09-09-2004, 03:31 PM
I was gonna make it bigger, but i thought if i went any further back, there would be a power supply blocking the window, and if i went any further forward there would be a cdrom blocking the window. I only really wanted it for the fan.

If you clean those cuts up little and take care of those scratches or maybe make it a nice shiny smooth paint job it would be perfect!

Nice work, keep it up!

I got 2 weeks off TAFE coming up soon, so im gonna repaint it and fix up all the minor details then. Once Ive done that Ill probably put it away untill I have enough money to start filling it with all the good stuff. Im not really looking forward to painting it thougth... I know im gonna screw it up some how... Oh well... Its gotta be done.

I sanded all the black off the side of my case this afternoon :) It does look pretty cool all silver and all, but the black did look better. I also cleaned up my cuts too.

Does anyone have any little pointers that will help me not screw up my paint job???

Painted it today. I had to paint the whole thing, cos i didnt want a different colour on one side than I had on the other side and the top. The top turned out great, and so dod the right side, but the left side (the side that had the scratches on it the really needed to be painted) needs to be re-done... Its ****ed. I finished painting it, then the wind picked up and it got covered in grass... Grrr. I was really anoyed at that. Ill post some pics when I get more batterys for my camera.

i would just for more air flow and if you put it off to one of hte sides or top or bottom like not dead center it would make it look really nice IMO. just a thought

Im gonna put another fan in the side window, but ARC only had one left when I went in... still waiting for them to get more in stock.

I was thinking of putting it here when I get it...

Anyway... Today I put another coat of black paint on the right side and the top... and they look great... Im really happy with them :D :D

And I tired to fix the left side... but its ****ed... Im gonna have to sand it right back to metal and start over on that side... Grrr...

Im still lacking batteries for my camera, so no new pics yet. I might get some tomorrow if I remember while im at the shops... But knowing me, ill forget again.

i would move it an inch down and to the right ot off set it a little sysmetry is nice but to much and it looks booring so by off setting it where its not really in line with anything else it kinda add excitment to the project. Does taht sound right? im always open to new ideas adn thoughts :D :p

I don't know i'm personally a symetry freak. Whenever I design something I try really hard to make it symetrical.

Im in the middle of painting it now. Im just painting it black again, cos I scratched it up a bit when I was cutting the window. Would of finished painting today, but i ran out of paint... Grrr. I got another can now, but I havent had time to do it yet, and its dark and cold outside now, so ill be doing later... Probably gonna be tuesday now.

Chrus
09-16-2004, 11:36 PM
Im gonna start off by saying i forgot to get batteries yesterday, so still no new pics.

I put the last coat of paint on the right side pannel today, so thats finished now, and so is the top. And I must say, Im very happy with how those 2 turned out.

But I still havent got the left side done yet... thats really giving me the ****s. I cant be bothered doing any more sanding today, so thats gonna have to with till im not feeling so lazy.

And ARC still dont have the fan that im waiting on, so I cant do that yet.

Chrus

I got bored... so i sanded it right back to metal and put the first coat on... and it looks briliant... I just gotta find some time to put the next coat on now.

Should I put a coat of clear coat on top???

well its hard to say, i think some pics are in due also clear coat is hard to do ESP when trying to get even you usualy have to still buff that clear coat iwht a buffer to get it smooth, even teh pro's usualy have to do it everyone once in awhile if nto often. so if you get some pics it would be easier to say thanks!

Chrus
09-20-2004, 04:05 PM
So you think I would screw up the clear coat... yeah... I probably would. Ill try and get some pics later today.

sounds cool chrush. cant wait to see pictures. if you have any scrap metal hanging around (maybe from the windows?) take it and spray it black and spray some clear coat and see what you think... I hear clear coat really isn't good unless you're afraid you'll scratch the paint easily. but I dont really know so you'll have to try it out.

So now I can do this when it arrives... http://www.bit-tech.net/article/136/

Still havent decided how im gonna mount it yet. I saw somewhere someone made it slide in and out of the cd bay kinda like a drawer... I might do something liek that. Anyone have any other suggestions that might work???

Dude thats fscking awesome! Painfully easy too!

I reckon that it would be awesome to make some sort of control panel with buttons and stuff and be able to control winamp from it. Damn Im seriously considering doing that mod! Very cool.

I got my new desk the other day, and i built it on sautrday night. I put my case where its gonna sit when its all done, and im thinking im gonna have to reconcider having the lcd on the front of my case like i was gonna. Im thinking im gonna have to put it on the little shelf above where my normal monitor is gonna sit. Ill try to post some pics tomorrow so this makes more sence.

Oh... and im gonna go buy my monitor and CCFL's on wednesday when i get paid...
